NAPLES, Fla. – The Elms College softball team split a pair of games at the Gene Cusic Classic in Naples, Fla., on Tuesday morning, picking up a 16-1 win over Anna Maria before falling 3-0 to Albion.
The Blazers move to 1-5 on the season after Tuesday's games and wrap up the event on Wednesday against Waynesburg and New Jersey City beginning at 9:00 a.m.
GAME 1 – Elms 16, Anna Maria 1 (5 Innings)
The Blazer offense clicked on all cylinders right from the start in Elms' first win of the season. The Blazers scored in each of the first five innings and kept the Cats off the board through the first three to take control of the game.
Elms plated three runs in the first, five in the second, three in the third, and four in the fourth to build a 15-0 lead. Anna Maria picked up a run in the bottom of the fourth, but Elms added another in the top of the fifth and shut down the Cats in the bottom of the inning for the win.
The Blazers got most of their offense from a pair of infielders. Third baseman Elizabeth Olszewski went 3-for-5 and drove in five runs for Elms, including a two-run home run to left-center that put the Blazers ahead 8-0 in the second inning. Shortstop Madison Messier also went 3-for-5 at the plate and added four RBIs in the game.
Lisa Lusardi picked up the win for Elms after pitching three-plus innings without allowing an earned run. Raeann Tumel relieved Lusardi in the fourth inning to get the final six outs while allowing just one hit.
GAME 2 – Albion 3, Elms 0
Elms was unable to match three early runs from Albion in a 3-0 loss in the second game of the day. The Britons scored twice in the first inning and once in the second while Albion (5-3) pitcher Eryn VanderVlucht gave up just three hits in the complete-game shutout.
Katelyn Sylvia had a double for Elms and Jeszy McGuire and Tyla Risucci each singled in the game.
Tumel started the game and went four innings for Elms, and just one of the three runs Albion scored against her was earned. Lusardi tossed the final two innings and scattered three hits.
