Swmming Closes Regular Season at UNE

BIDDEFORD, Maine – The Elms College swim team wrapped up the 2015-16 regular season with a dual meet at the University of New England Saturday afternoon. The Blazers men's team recorded a 105-47 win, while the women's squad fell to the host Nor'easters, 166-83.

On the men's side, freshman Michael Grippo (Longmeadow, Mass.) registered a trio of wins, taking first in the 50 yard freestyle (24.26), the 50 yard backstroke (27.58), and the 100 yard freestyle (51.49). Junior Nick Cirillo (Gloversville, N.Y.) and Grippo finished tied in first in the 100 yard freestyle, while Cirillo also nabbed first in the 200 yard freestyle in a pool-record time of 1:51.13. Senior Misha Kuyuzov (Swampscott, Mass.) placed first in the 50 yard breaststroke (31.99), junior Ryan Burgos (Plaistow, N.H.) grabbed first in the 1000 yard freestyle with a pool-record time of 10:44.51, and senior James Grippo (Longmeadow, Mass.) came in first in the 100 yard butterfly. Freshman Kevin Corcoran (Waterbury, Conn.) finished second in the 50 yard breaststroke (36.97), while sophomore DJ Sherman (Winstead, Conn.) took second in the 100 yard butterfly (1:04.90). Sophomore Tony Luciani (Agawam, Mass.) clocked a third place finish in the 50 yard freestyle (27.78), and freshman Patrick Gay (East Hartford, Conn.) finished third in the 50 yard backstroke (34.15).

For the women, senior Kim Panetta (Belchertown, Mass.) placed first in the 50 yard butterfly (32.75), and second in the 100 yard individual medley (1:14.16). Freshman Kayla Gurney (Wilbraham, Mass.) won the 100 meter individual medley (1:13.43), while sophomore Ashlee Connors (Springfield, Mass.) grabbed a pair of second-place finishes in the 50 yard backstroke (34.17) and the 100 yard backstroke (1:14.67). Junior Kelly O'Connell (Monson, Mass.) finished second in the 500 yard freestyle (6:27.41), and freshman Desi Milar (Springfield, Mass.) took second in the 50 yard butterfly (35.98). Junior Rebecca Carterud (South Windsor, Conn.) placed third in the 50 yard butterfly (39.75). Senior Miranda Pratt (Southington, Conn.), sophomore Rachael Coleman (West Hartford, Conn.), and freshmen Amanda Rotberg (Rowley, Mass.) and Jacqueline Given (Arlington, Mass.) all notched fifth-place finishes.

The Blazers will return to action with the NEISDA Championships from February 11th to 14th at the University of Rhode Island in Kingston, Rhode Island.
