Men's Swimming Defeats Colby-Sawyer

NEW LONDON, N.H. – The Elms College swimming teams found success in a tri-meet match at Colby-Sawyer College Saturday afternoon. The men's squad defeated the host Chargers, 131-109, while the women's squad fell to Colby-Sawyer, 88-151, and Plymouth State, 73-175, in non-conference action at Knight Natatorium.

For the men, junior Ryan Burgos (Plaistow, N.H.) set a pool record in the 1000 yard freestyle with a time of 10:42.27, while adding a first-place finish in the 500 yard freestyle (5:19.71) and third-place finish in the 50 yard breast (32.11). Junior Nick Cirillo (Gloversville, N.Y.) logged a pair of first-place victories in the 100 yard freestyle (51.25) and 200 yard freestyle (1:52.12), along with a second-place finish in the 500 yard freestyle (5:19.80). Senior Misha Kuyuzov (Swampscott, Mass.) claimed first in the 50 yard butterfly (27.36) and the 200 yard breaststroke (2:29.45), and finished second in the 50 yard breaststroke (30.86). Senior James Grippo (Longmeadow, Mass.) registered a trio of second-place finishes in the 50 yard back (28.90), the 200 yard back (2:15.72), and 400 yard individual medley (4:57.99). Freshman Michael Grippo (Longmeadow, Mass.) grabbed second in the 50 yard freestyle (23.67) and the 200 yard freestyle (1:59.36), and third in the 100 yard freestyle (52.76), while sophomore DJ Sherman (Winstead, Conn.) took second in the 100 yard butterfly, and third in the 400 yard individual medley (5:06.04) and the 1000 yard freestyle (12:07.85). Freshman Patrick Gay (East Hartford, Conn.) finished third in the 50 yard butterfly (29.98) and 100 yard butterfly (1:13.78), and fourth in the 200 yard backstroke (2:45.12). Freshman Joseph Sutton (Suffield, Conn.) was fourth in the 50 yard freestyle (34.33) and the 50 yard backstroke (39.40), and fifth in the 200 yard freestyle (2:42.19), and sophomore Tony Luciani (Agawam, Mass.) finished fourth in the 100 yard butterfly (1:23.08) and the 500 yard freestyle (7:06.40), and fifth in the 100 yard freestyle (1:06.72). In the 400 yard medley relay, the team of Michael Grippo, Kuyuzov, Burgos, and Cirillo won the event with a time of 3:30.41. In the 200 yard medley relay, the team of James Grippo, Gay, Sherman, and Luciani claimed second with a time of 2:04.35.

On the women's side. sophomore Ashlee Connors (Springfield, Mass.) won the 50 yard backstroke in a time of 31.59, while finishing fourth in the 200 yard backstroke (2:39.17) and 200 yard individual medley (2:47.92). Freshman Kayla Gurney (Wilbraham, Mass.) placed second in the 50 yard breaststroke (35.49), third in the 200 yard breaststroke (2:51.43), and fifth in the 50 yard freestyle (28.83). Senior Kim Panetta (Belchertown, Mass.) claimed third in the 100 yard butterfly (1:15.95), fifth in the 50 yard butterfly (32.14), and sixth in the 100 yard free (1:04.36). Junior Kelly O'Connell (Monson, Mass.) grabbed fourth-place finishes in the 500 yard freestyle (6:34.49) and 1000 yard freestyle (13:40.79), and sixth in the 100 yard butterfly (1:33.79). Freshman Desi Milar took fourth in the 100 yard freestyle (28.72), fifth in the 100 yard freestyle (1:03.07), and ninth in the 50 yard butterfly (35.31). Senior Crystal Archibald (Portland, Maine) finished fifth in the 50 yard breaststroke (38.26), and sixth in the 200 yard breaststroke (3:05.02) and the 200 yard individual medley (3:03.59), while sophomore Rachel Coleman (West Hartford, Conn.) took fifth in the 200 yard freestyle (2:36.79) and ninth in the 50 yard breaststroke (41.59). Freshman Jacqueline Given (Arlington, Mass.) notched a pair of sixth-place finishes in the 200 yard freestyle (2:43.15) and 500 yard freestyle (7:31.43), while junior Rebecca Carterud (South Windsor, Conn.) took fifth in the 200 yard backstroke (2:54.89). Freshman Amanda Rotberg (Rowley, Mass.) finished eighth in the 50 yard backstroke (39.74). In the 200 yard medley relay, the team of Connors, Panetta, Gurney, and Milar finished third with a time of 2:07.22. In the 400 yard medley relay, the team of Coleman, Given, O'Connell, and Carterud took fifth with a time of 4:54.78.

The Blazers will return to the pool with a road trip to UMass-Dartmouth on Saturday November 21st at 1:00 p.m.
