Burgos, Cirillo Set School Records Against Mount Saint Mary's

CHICOPEE, Mass. – The Elms College men's and women's swimming teams battled against visiting Mount Saint Mary's College at Partyka Natatorium Saturday afternoon. The Blazers men's squad defeated the Blue Knights, 128-105, while the women's team fell to MSMC, 189-60.

On the men's side, juniors Ryan Burgos (Plaistow, N.H.) and Nick Cirillo (Gloversville, N.Y.) set Elms College school records during the meet. Cirillo notched a trio of first-place finishes, winning the 200 meter freestyle with a school-record time of 2:04.89, the 100 meter freestyle (56.52) and the 400 meter freestyle (4:33.20). Burgos claimed first in the 800 freestyle in a school-record time of 9:21.18 and the 100 breaststroke (1:18.61), along with a second-place finish in the 50 breaststroke (35.09). Senior Michael Grippo (Longmeadow, Mass.) clocked a pair of second-place finishes in the 800 meter freestyle (10:28.14) and the 100 meter backstroke (1:11.64), while sophomore DJ Sherman (Winstead, Conn.) grabbed second in the 100 meter butterfly (1:12.31) and the 200 meter individual medley (2:37.43). Freshman Michael Grippo (Longmeadow, Mass.) took second in the 50 meter backstroke (31.54) and the 50 meter freestyle (26.78), and fellow freshman Kevin Corcoran (Southington, Conn.) nabbed second in the 200 meter freestyle (2:20.25) and the 400 meter freestyle (5:02.20). Freshman Patrick Gay (East Hartford, Conn.) finished second in the 50 meter butterfly (33.70) and third in the 100 meter butterfly (1:19.65). Sophomore Tony Luciani (Agawam, Mass.) placed third in the 50 meter butterfly (35.66), and freshman Joseph Sutton (Suffield, Conn.) finished fourth in the 50 meter backstroke (42.31). In the 200 meter freestyle relay, the team of Michael Grippo, Burgos, Corcoran, and Cirillo won the event with a time of 1:48.74. In the 200 meter medley relay, the team of James Grippo, Sherman, Gay and Luciani placed second at 2:15.62.

For the women, freshman Kayla Gurney (Wilbraham, Mass.) registered a pair of second-place finishes in the 50 meter breaststroke (39.32) and the 100 meter breaststroke (1:27.01), while sophomore Ashlee Connors (Springfield, Mass.) claimed second in the 100 meter backstroke (1:22.52). Senior Kim Panetta (Belchertown, Mass.) grabbed two third-place finishes in the 50 meter butterfly (35.92) and 200 meter freestyle (2:43.19), and junior Kelly O'Connell (Monson, Mass.) took third in the 400 meter freestyle (5:54.58). Senior Crystal Archibald (Portland, Maine) and freshman Desi Milar (Springfield, Mass.) each clocked a pair of fourth-place finishes, and junior Rebecca Carterud (South Windsor, Conn.) finished fourth in the 400 meter freestyle (6:02.94). In the 200 meter medley relay, the team of Connors, Gurney, Panetta and Milar finished second with a time of 2:24.24. In the 200 meter freestyle relay, the team of freshman Jacqueline Given (Arlington, Mass.), Carterud, freshman Amanda Rotberg (Rowley, Mass.), and senior Miranda Pratt (Southington, Conn.) took third in a time of 2:29.56.

The Blazers will return to action as the women's swimming team battles Western New England Wednesday evening at 5:00 p.m. The Blue Knights host Montclair State University Friday at 3:00 p.m.
