Swimming Sweeps St. Joseph's In Home Opener

CHICOPEE, Mass. – The Elms College men's and women's swim teams both picked up victories over visiting St. Joseph's College (Maine) in a dual meet at Partyka Natatorium Saturday afternoon. The men's team registered a 116-63 win, while the women defeated the Monks, 132-166.

For the men's squad, junior Nick Cirillo (Gloversville, N.Y.) registered a trio of victories, coming in first in the 100 meter freestyle (57.59), 400 meter freestyle (4:44.38), and the 800 meter freestyle (9:49.84). Senior Misha Kuyuzov (Chicopee, Mass.) recorded first-place finishes in the 50 meter breaststroke (33.88), and the 100 meter breaststroke (1:14.67). Junior Ryan Burgos (Plaistow, N.H.) won the 200 meter freestyle with a time of 2:07.84, while finishing second in the 100 meter breaststroke (1:17.23) and third in the 50 meter freestyle (26.83). Freshman Michael Grippo (Longmeadow, Mass.) was second in the 50 meter freestyle (26.58), the 100 meter freestyle (1:00.02), and the 200 meter freestyle (2:09.11). Senior James Grippo (Longmeadow, Mass.) collected a pair of second-place finishes in the 100 meter butterfly (1:08.61) and the 100 meter backstroke (1:09.93). Sophomore DJ Sherman (Winstead, Conn.) clocked in at second in the 400 meter freestyle (5:07.64) and the 800 meter freestyle (10:40.38), along with a third-place finish in the 100 meter butterfly (1:14.70). Freshman Joseph Sutton (Suffield, Conn.) took second in the 50 meter backstroke (41:05), and fourth in the 50 meter freestyle (36.74), while freshman Patrick Gay (East Hartford, Conn.) claimed fourth in the 100 meter butterfly with a time of 1:22.08. Sophomore Tony Luciani (Agawam, Mass.) finished third in the 50 meter backstroke (47.22) and fourth in the 100 meter freestyle (1:13.93). In the 200 meter medley relay, the team of James Grippo, freshman Kevin Corcoran (Southington, Conn.), Gay, and Luciani placed first with a time of 2:18.54. 

On the women's side, sophomore Ashlee Connors (Springfield, Mass.) won the 50 meter backstroke (34.93) and the 100 meter backstroke (1:19.64), and finished second in the 100 meter individual medley (1:25.30). Freshman Kayla Gurney (Wilbraham, Mass.) came in first in the 50 meter breaststroke (38.74) and the 100 meter breaststroke (1:24.71), and took third in the 50 meter butterfly (36.80). Senior Kim Panetta (Belchertown, Mass.) placed first in the 100 meter butterfly (1:22.93), along with a pair of second-place finishes in the 50 meter butterfly (36.80) and the 100 meter freestyle (1:12.55). Junior Kelly O'Connell (Monson, Mass.) claimed second in the 400 meter freestyle (5:57.72) and the 800 meter freestyle (12:11.44), and third in the 100 meter butterfly with a time of 1:45.49. Freshman Desi Milar picked up a second-place finish in the 50 meter freestyle (32.59), along with two third-place finishes in the 100 meter freestyle (1:12.63) and the 200 meter freestyle (2:44.58). Senior Crystal Archibald (Portland, Maine) recorded three third-place finishes in the 50 meter breaststroke (42.65), the 100 meter breaststroke (1:37.09), and the 800 meter freestyle (12:57.54). Sophomore Rachel Coleman (West Hartford, Conn.) was third in the 50 meter freestyle (35.02) and the 400 meter freestyle (2:56.22), along with a fifth-place finish in the 200 meter freestyle with a time of 2:57.40. Senior Miranda Pratt (Southington, Conn.) placed fourth in the 50 meter butterfly (1:00.35), the 400 meter freestyle (7:10.86), and 800 meter freestyle (14:19.69); while junior Rebecca Carterud (South Windsor, Conn.) picked up three fourths in the 50 meter backstroke (42.98), the 100 meter backstroke (1:31.70) and the 100 meter individual medley (1:37.07). Freshman Jacqueline Given (Arlington, Mass.) notched a fourth-place finish in the 50 meter freestyle (35.17) and the 200 meter freestyle (2:56.22), along with a fifth in the 100 meter breaststroke (1:39.72). Freshman Amanda Rotberg (Rowley, Mass.) posted fifth-place finishes in the 50 meter backstroke (44.65), the 100 meter freestyle (1:31.53), and the 100 meter individual medley (1:42.21). In the 200 meter medley relay, the team of Connors, Gurney, Panetta, and Milar finished first with a time of 2:18.85. In the 200 meter freestyle relay, the team of Given, Coleman, O'Connell, and Carterud placed second with a time of 2:33.47.

The Blazers will return to the pool at Colby-Sawyer College for a meet on Saturday, November 14th.
