CHICOPEE, Mass. – The Elms College men's soccer squad captured a 1-0 victory over visiting Newbury College in a New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) clash at Leary Field Wednesday afternoon. With the win, the Blazers rise to 7-10 overall, and 5-1 in the NECC, while the Nighthawks drop to 2-4 in conference play, and 4-13 on the season.

After nearly 17 minutes of scoreless play, the Blazers capitalized on a corner kick opportunity to break the scoreless tie. Junior Anthony Romei (Enfield, Conn.) lifted a high cross to the front of the net, where senior Kahlil Peters (Hartford, Conn.) elevated above the Newbury defense and placed a header past Nighthawk sophomore keeper Chris Tran (Nantucket, Mass.) to give the Blazers to 1-0 edge.

The Blazers had a chance to add to their advantage in the 27th minute as freshman Myles Hurley (Manchester, Conn.) was taken down on a run in the box, resulting in a penalty kick for Elms. On the ensuing attempt, Tran received a stroke of good luck as the shot from Blazers senior C.J Dabkowski (Bristol, Conn.) rang off the left goal post, keeping the score at 1-0.

The Blazers defense limited Newbury to five shots in the second half to preserve the 1-0 victory.

The Nighthawks edged the Blazers in the shot column, 12-9, during the contest. Elms freshman keeper A.J. Oliviera (Beacon Falls, Conn.) recorded a pair of saves in his third clean sheet of the season, while Tran stopped a match-high five shots for Newbury.

The Blazers will close out the regular season against Dean College Saturday at Leary Field. Kickoff is slated for 11:00 a.m. Newbury travels to Mitchell Saturday for an NECC contest at 1:00 p.m.
