CHICOPEE, Mass. – The Elms College men's soccer was overwhelmed by visiting Wester New England University in a 5-1 non-conference defeat at Leary Field Saturday afternoon. The Blazers slide to 0-3 on the season, while the Golden Bears improved to 3-1 overall.

The Golden Bears captured a lead they wouldn't relinquish in the 14th minute of action as senior Troy Remillard (Palmer, Mass.) delivered the finish off a cross from graduate Kory Caster (Wilbraham, Mass.) to stake WNE to a 1-0 lead. In the 22nd minute, the Golden Bears fired a pair of shots that were knocked down by the Blazers defense, but sophomore Ty Champagne (Watertown, Conn.) gathered the loose ball and ripped a shot through traffic to increase the Western New England lead to 2-0.

With 14:30 remaining in the first half, the Golden Bears drew a foul in the box, resulting in a penalty kick opportunity, where WNE junior Nick Liccardi (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) beat Elms freshman keeper Julian Brosi (West Newbury, Mass.) to his left side, pushing the Golden Bears ahead 3-0.

In the 43rd minute of play, Remillard grabbed a loose ball, raced into the box and fired a shot into the top left corner for his second tally of the day. Remillard completed the hat trick less than two minutes later as he headed home a cross from freshman Matt Remillard (Palmer, Mass.) to hand Western New England a 5-0 lead at the break.

The Blazers cracked the scoreboard in the 51st minute of play as sophomore Babba Jaden (Clarkston, Ga.) lept and knocked in a cross from senior C.J. Dabkowski (Bristol, Conn.) to cut the gap to 5-1.

The Golden Bears controlled the shot column, 24-8, during the contest. Brosi matched a career-high with seven saves, while WNE junior Tyler Lavigne (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) stopped three shots in the win.

The Blazers will look to move into the win column when they travel to Pine Manor for a non-conference clash Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. Western New England travels to Westfield State for a non-conference match Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
