Men's Basketball Cruises Past Arcadia, 80-62
CHICOPEE, Mass. - Elms College senior guard
Juan Maldonado (Holyoke Mass.) scored 11 points,
while junior forward Edgar Martinez (Springfield
Mass.) followed with 10 points to help guide the Blazers
to an 80-62 victory over Arcadia University in the opening game of
the 2009 men’s Blazer Tip-off Tournament Saturday night at
Picknelly Arena.
With the win, Elms rises to 2-0 on the season, while Arcadia falls
to 0-2.
In the early going the score was tied 7-7 before Elms College
exploded with a 19 point run, which was capped off by a layup from
Martinez. Elms maintained a steady lead throughout the first half
that put them up 20 as they went into the locker room.
The second half featured a heavy amount of the up-beat
Blazer’s bench, which helped propel the lead to 33. Half of
the Blazers 80 points came off the bench, led by freshman
Andre French (Torrington Conn.) with nine and
junior Robert Hargrove (Detroit Mich.) with
eight.
Elm’s College displayed solid defense for the duration of
the game, causing 34 Knight turnovers and holding them to 34
percent shooting. The Blazers turned the turnovers into 40
points.
Arcadia’s Renard Smith (New Orleans, La.)
scored a game-high 14 points, while Chris Pearson
(Philadelphia, Pa.) chipped in 11.
The Blazers next matchup comes Sunday at 4 p.m. in Picknelly Arena
as they take on the Brooklyn Bridges in the second day of the Elms
College Blazer Tip Off.
