ATTLEBORO, Mass. – Elms College senior point guard Juan Maldonado (Holyoke, Mass.) was named the 2009-10 New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Player of the Year for men’s basketball as announced by the league office on Friday.

Maldonado, who was also named First Team All-NECC, is the program’s all-time leading scorer with 1,620 points for his career. During conference action this season, Maldonado finished fourth in scoring (17.1 points per game), third in three-point field goals made (44), second in three-point field goal percentage (44.9-percent), 15th in field goal percentage (46.6-percent), 10th in assists (40) and 11th in steals (22). In overall statistics, he is third in scoring (17.6 points per game), first in free throw percentage (86.8-percent), third in steals (54), first in three-point field goal percentage (46.2-percent) and second in three-point field goals made (80).

Senior forward Javon Mathis (East Hartford, Conn.) earned Second Team All-NECC honors after finishing the regular season with 316 points, and a team-high total of 201 rebounds, while junior forward Edgar Martinez (Springfield, Mass.) was named Honorable Mention All-NECC. Martinez netted 248 points in his first season with the Blazers after transferring from Springfield Technical Community College. He also hauled in 107 rebounds during the regular season (second on the team) and was second on the team in blocked shots with 20.
