Chicopee, MA – The Elms College women's volleyball team defeated the visiting Westfield State University Owls on Wednesday night 3-1 (25-19, 21-25, 25-21, 25-23).
The match was very well played and tightly contested throughout, with both teams playing at a high level. The Blazers would take the opening set 25-19, only to see the Owls come back and win the second set 21-25.
The Blazers were trailing 17-9 in the third set. After a team time out Elms would turn it up and win six consecutive points, and 16 of the possible 20 points to take the set 25-21 and a 2-1 advantage.
The fourth set saw back and forth action with neither team able to pull away. With the score 22-22 the Blazers would get a huge kill from Haley Castanos (Santa Ana, CA) off an assist from Dakota Stewart (Victoria, TX) and take a one point lead. Sabrina Christie (Agawam, MA) would seal the match for the Blazers with a big kill, giving Elms the set and a 3-1 win.
Several Blazers dominated the stat line, led by Stewart who posted a double-double with 44 assists and 10 digs. Kianna Lozada (Bayamon, P.R.) was impressive with 31 digs, Jaylianne Ramos (Toa Alta, P.R.) provided an offensive punch with 15 kills.
Elms is back in action on Friday 9/27 at 6:00PM when they host Eastern Nazarene College in their conference opener.
