Women's Lacrosse Rally Cut Short, as Blue Jays Take Conference Victory
CHICOPEE, Mass. - The Elms College Women's Lacrosse team hosted University of Saint Joseph, Conn. in conference action on Saturday evening at Leary Field.
BASICS
Score: Elms College 13 | University of Saint Joseph, Conn. 18
Records: Blazers 1-6, 1-4 (GNAC) | Blue Jays 2-7, 1-3 (GNAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
Junior attacker/midfielder Jackie Cronin (Smithtown, N.Y.) would get the scoring started early for the Blazers, giving Elms a 1-0 lead before the Blue Jays answered with a goal of their own. Sophomore midfielder Rachel Dort (Chicopee, Mass.) would chip in an early goal herself to give the Blazers a lead, but Saint Joseph would score five unanswered goals to take a 6-2 lead over the Blazers. After that, Elms tightened up their defense, and Cronin contributed another goal, as well as assisting sophomore defense/attacker Shea Barron (Wallingford, Conn.) on her first collegiate goal and senior midfielder/attacker Greta Frankwicz (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) twice to give Elms four goals and a lot of momentum. However, USJ scored a flurry of goals to keep pace with the Blazers to take an 11-6 lead. Frankwicz would score another goal right before halftime, but a late USJ goal would push the lead out to 12-7 at the half.
Elms was held scoreless in the third and struggled to contain the Jays on defense. Saint Joseph took advantage of the thin Elms line and extended their lead out to 16-7. Cronin and Dort would both score again in the fourth to keep Elms within striking distance, but USJ always had an answer to keep the Blazers at bay. Down 18-9, Cronin scored four straight goals to make the score 18-13, but her incredible performance came up short, as Elms fell 18-13 in an incredible offensive game.
