Balanced Attack Lifts Wheelock College Past Women’s Lacrosse, 22-14
BOSTON, Mass. – Elms College received four goals from freshman Emily Dawson (Somers, Conn.) and the Blazers netted 10 goals in the second frame, but Wheelock College scored 11 goals in each frame to help cement a 22-14 victory in Saturday afternoon's New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) women's lacrosse game at the Winsor School Field in Boston, Mass.
With the loss, Elms concludes regular season action 4-10 overall, 2-3 in league action. Wheelock improves to 5-7 on the season, 4-1 in NECC play.
After Elms' junior midfielder Kayla Narey (South Hadley, Mass.) scored the opening goal of the contest just 27 seconds into play, Wheelock erupted for 11 of the next 14 goals to stake an 11-4 advantage at halftime.
Katie Gavin (Manchester-by-the-Sea, Mass.) scored four of her game-high nine goals in the opening half while Molly Centore (Kennebunk, Maine) added three markers and Christina Cubera (Baltimore, Md.) found the back of the net twice. Emma Marrs (Old Lyme, Conn.) and Valerie Ferrante (Milford, Mass.) added a goal each to cap the Wildcats' first half surge.
Freshman Kathleen Tuechler (Farmingdale, N.Y.) scored twice and junior attacker Nora McDonough (South Hadley, Mass.) added a scoring strike for the Blazers.
The second half featured back and forth action as Wheelock held a slight 11-10 advantage in goals in the frame.
Gavin struck the net five more times, Centore added five second half goals of her own, and Violet Vig (Glastonbury, Conn.) netted the Wildcats other goal in the stanza.
Dawson posted four markers, McDonough scored twice, and Narey, Tuechler, senior midfielder Brianna Lyons (Canton, Mass.) and sophomore attacker Ashley Cava (Wilbraham, Mass.) added a goal each in the second period.
Lyons and Gavin led all players with seven groundball pickups and each led their teams with five and four caused turnovers each. Tuechler added five groundballs for Elms and caused three opponent turnovers.
Elms' sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Carpenter (Vernon, Conn.) turned away nine shots and suffered the loss, while Wheelock net-minder Meghan Lewis (South Berwick, Maine) secured 21 saves to preserve the win.
Both teams enter next week's NECC Championship tournament - Wheelock as the second seed, Elms as the fourth seed.
