Women’s Lacrosse Falls to Wentworth Institute of Technology, 20-10

BOSTON, Mass. – Elms College junior attacker Lauren Mazza (Agawam, Mass.) scored four goals, but Wentworth Institute of Technology's Molly Dufresne (Plaistow, N.H.) netted four goals to lead seven Leopards with multiple goals in Tuesday evening's non-conference women's lacrosse game in Boston, Mass.

With the loss, Elms moves to 1-3 on the season, while Wentworth improves to 2-1 overall.

In the first half, Elms got on the board just 53 seconds into play as junior attacker Nora McDonough (South Hadley, Mass.) fired in a marker to give the Blazers a 1-0 lead. Following a Wentworth score at the 25:17 mark, the Blazers notched a 2-1 advantage when Mazza struck for the first of her goals.

The Leopards then scored five unanswered goals to take a 6-2 lead before Elms' junior midfielder Kayla Narey (South Hadley, Mass.) broke the stretch with her first tally of the contest. A goal by the Leopards' Pam Mudge (Hooksett, N.H.), followed by back-to-back goals by Mazza and Narey pulled the Blazers to within two at 7-5 with 3:09 to play. Wentworth then scored three straight goals to end the half with a 10-5 cushion.

Elms came out firing to start the second stanza scoring three of the first four goals to narrow the Leopards' lead to 11-8. McDonough, Mazza and Narey each found the back of the net during the stretch that played out just 4:05 into the period.

Wentworth then erupted for eight of the next nine scores including three scores from Heather Saroch (Arnold, Md.), and two each from Alexandra Banks (Ellington, Conn.) and Brandie Holland (Lynn, Mass.) to help stake a 20-9 lead with 4:41 to play in the game.

Elms halted the run when sophomore attacker Ashley Cava (Wilbraham, Mass.) netted her first goal of the contest to set the final score at 20-10.

Narey finished with three scores and earned six draw controls, while McDonough netted two goals. Senior midfielder Brianna Lyons (Canton, Mass.) picked up four ground balls and won four draws, while freshman defender Kathleen Tuechler (Farmingdale, N.Y.) notched five draw controls.

Elms' sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Carpenter (Vernon, Conn.) made 13 saves in the losing effort.

Jessica Houghton (Billerica, Mass.), Mudge and Banks each recorded three goals for Wentworth behind Dufresne's four markers, while Holland, Saroch and Julie Azzinaro (Westerly, R.I.) found the back of the net twice to help seal the victory.

Banks led the squad with seven groundball pickups, while Houghton and Melissa Pilley (Lancaster, Mass.) secured four groundballs in the winning effort. Goalkeeper Robyn Pacini (Stoneham, Mass.) turned away 10 shots to seal.

Elms returns to non-league action on Sunday, March 23 at Rhode Island College at 1:00 p.m.
