The Sage Colleges Edge Women’s Lacrosse, 12-9 in 2014 Season-Opener

CHICOPEE, Mass. – Elms College junior midfielder Lauren Mazza (Agawam, Mass.) scored a team-high six goals but the Sage Colleges used eight goals from Kimberlee Carr (Colonie, N.Y.) to help spark the Gators to a 12-9 win over the Blazers in Wednesday evening's non-conference women's lacrosse game at Leary Field.

With the loss, Elms starts its season 0-1 overall, while Sage begins its campaign, 1-0 on the season.

Carr netted four of Sage's five markers in the first half helping the Gators stake a 4-2 lead with 18:14 left in the period. Elms' junior midfielder Kayla Narey (South Hadley, Mass.) and Mazza netted back-to-back goals separated by 54 seconds to even the game at 4-4 before Mallory Hansen (Johnstown, N.Y.) answered with a goal to set the score at 5-4 with 9:53 to play.

Mazza found the back of the net for the equalizer with just 69 seconds left in the half on free position shot to set the score at 5-5 at intermission.

In the second half, Alexandria Dodge (Marcy, N.Y.) and Mazza exchanged early goals before Dodge struck for his second tally that ignited a string of four unanswered scores for the Gators. Carr netted a pair and Monica Koralus (Verbank, N.Y.) added a scoring strike to help Sage post a 10-6 advantage with 12:45 left in the contest.

Mazza netted three more goals for the Blazers but Carr added two more goals to help the Gators close out the 12-9 win.

Elms' junior attacker Nora McDonough (South Hadley, Mass.) scored the first two goals for Elms in the first frame. Freshman defender Kathleen Tuechler (Farmingdale, N.Y.) picked up a game-high seven groundballs and senior midfielder Brianna Lyons (Canton, Mass.) added three groundballs in the losing effort.

Tuechler and sophomore attacker Ashley Cava (Wilbraham, Mass.) each added an assist, while Narey won five draws.

Sage was led by Carr's eight strikes and assist, while Dodge added a pair of goals. Hansen contributed a goal and an assist and picked up a team-best four groundballs.

Elms' sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Carpenter (Vernon, Conn.) made eight saves in the loss, while Jackie St. Pierre (Averill Park, N.Y.) made six saves for the Gators to preserve the win.

Elms is back in action on Friday, March 7 when it hosts Bay Path College at 4:00 p.m. at Leary Field.
