Women’s Lacrosse Falls at Worcester State University, 16-5

WORCESTER, Mass. – Elms College sophomore midfielder Kayla Narey (South Hadley, Mass.) scored a team-high three goals, but Worcester State University built an 8-1 lead at intermission and used five goals from Megan Sheehan (Dunstable, Mass.) as the Lancers claimed a 16-5 victory over the Blazers in Wednesday evening's New England Women's Lacrosse Alliance (NEWLA) game at Coughlin Field.

With the loss, Elms falls to 0-14 overall, 0-7 in NEWLA play, while Worcester State improves to 3-11 overall, 3-4 in conference action.

Worcester State netted eight goals in the first 30 minutes of play including the first seven goals as Sheehan scored four of her five goals in the first period of play.

With 5:38 to play in the frame, Narey gave Elms its first score of the game and following the intermission, pulled the Blazers to within six (8-2) with just under 25 minutes to play in the contest.

The Lancers used a goal by Jaclyn Lawlor (Westford, Mass.) to start a stretch of four-straight scores to give Worcester State a 12-2 lead. Elms' sophomore midfielder Brianna Lyons (Canton, Mass.) scored on a free position shot with 17:27 to play and after Lawlor netted her third goal of the game, Narey added her third strike to set the score at 13-4 with 9:01 on the clock.

Vicki O'Brien (Canton, Mass.) found the back of the net for a third time with 6:21 to play as Worcester State scored three of the final four goals to pull away to a 16-5 victory as Blazers' senior attacker Emily Walsh (Hadley, Mass.) netted the final tally with 56 seconds to play.

Elms' senior goalkeeper Rachel Schrutt (Chicopee, Mass.) turned away 16 shots and scooped a team-high seven groundballs in the losing effort.

Angela Grassetti (Feeding Hills, Mass.) picked up a game-high nine groundballs, while goalkeeper Haley Erickson (Saugus, Mass.) recorded three saves to preserve the win.

Elms concludes regular season action on Saturday, April 28 when it hosts Bridgewater State University at 5:00 p.m. at Leary Field.
