Daniel Webster College Sneaks by Women’s Lacrosse, 9-8 in Double Overtime

NASHUA, N.H. – Elms College junior attacker Kaitlyn Harrington (East Longmeadow, Mass.) tallied a team-high four goals but Daniel Webster College's Natalie Bates (North Kingstown, R.I.) scored four goals of her own including the game-winner in the second period of extra time to lift the Eagles to a thrilling 9-8 double overtime victory over the Blazers in Tuesday afternoon's non-conference women's lacrosse game in Nashua, N.H.

With the loss, Elms falls to 0-5 on the season while Daniel Webster improves to 3-1 overall.

After Bates scored twice and Brandi Ritz (Burlington, N.J.) netted a goal to put Daniel Webster ahead 3-0 in the opening five minutes of play, Elms found its offensive rhythm as the Blazers struck for five straight goals as Harrington found the back of the net three times, while sophomore midfielder Kayla Narey (South Hadley, Mass.) and freshman attacker Lauren Mazza (Agawam, Mass.) netted one each to give Elms a 5-3 lead.

Eveline Lopes (Dorchester, Mass.) pulled the Eagles to within one with a score at the 9:22 mark of first period, before Elms' senior attacker Emily Walsh (Hadley, Mass.) closed out the frame with her first goal of the contest to give the Blazers a 6-4 lead at intermission.

Lopes and Walsh exchanged goals to start the second frame keeping Elms' advantage at two goals (7-5) until Daniel Webster used back-to-back strikes by Bates and Samantha Cotoni (Groton, Mass.) to knot the game at 7-7 with just under 15 minutes to play.

Harrington's fourth tally of the game put the Blazers on top, 8-7 with 7:12 to play, but Lopes answered at the 3:30 mark to even the game at 8-8. From there, neither team was able to net the winning goal in regulation.

After a scoreless first five minutes of extra time, Bates finally ended the game with a goal 1:34 into the second overtime period to lift Daniel Webster to the win.

Elms' senior goalkeeper Rachel Schrutt (Chicopee, Mass.) made 14 stops despite the loss, while Walsh collected a game-high six groundballs. Sophomore midfielder Brianna Lyons (Canton, Mass.) and freshman defender Alysha Parsons (Newington, Conn.) helped Elms maintain its offensive production scooping five groundballs each.

Daniel Webster's net-minder Teresa Moscati (Buffalo, N.Y.) notched 16 saves, while Bates, Ritz and Allyssa Marson (Augusta, Maine) picked up four groundballs each in the winning effort.
