Eight First-Half Goals Lifts Thomas College Past Women’s Lacrosse, 12-3

CHICOPEE, Mass. – Elms College senior goalkeeper Rachel Schrutt (Chicopee, Mass.) finished with 20 saves and freshman attacker Lauren Mazza (Agawam, Mass.) tallied a pair of free position goals but Thomas College scored eight goals in the first half and Jennifer Day (Gardiner, Maine) finished with five scores to help pace the Terriers to a 12-3 victory over the Blazers in Saturday's non-conference women's lacrosse game at Leary Field.

With the loss, Elms starts its season 0-1, while Thomas improves to 1-1 overall.

Trailing 8-0 after the first 30 minutes of play Elms' junior attacker Kaitlyn Harrington (East Longmeadow, Mass.) put the Blazers on the board with 15:07 to play in the contest when scored a free position goal.

Following a Brittany Premo (Concord, N.H.) score 1:06 later, Mazza scored the first of two back-to-back free position goals to set the score at 9-3 with 6:47 to play.

Two more goals by Day and one from Jasmine Ryan (Berwick, Maine) allowed the Terriers to pull away to a 12-3 victory.

Day scored three of her five goals in the first period, while Jillian Lambert (Dayton, Maine) added three scores in the first frame. Premo added two goals, while Kim Migliara (Mastic, N.Y.) notched a score in the winning effort.

Teshia Cates (Skowhegan, Maine) was stellar in net for Thomas notching 11 saves, while Day picked up eight groundballs to lead the squad.

Blazers' senior midfielder Emily Walsh (Hadley, Mass.), sophomore midfielder Brianna Lyons (Canton, Mass.) and junior defender Marcia Norat (Brockton, Mass.) collected a team-high four groundballs each, while Norat caused four opponent turnovers in the loss.

Elms returns to non-conference action on Saturday, March 17 when it hosts the Sage Colleges at 1:00 p.m. at Leary Field.
