Women’s Lacrosse Outlasted by Wheelock College, 13-12 in Overtime

BOSTON, Mass. – Elms College sophomore midfielder Kayla Narey (South Hadley, Mass.) scored five goals including the game-tying goal on a free position shot with 7:11 to play in the second period to send the game to overtime, but Wheelock College received a three-score effort from Valerie Ferrante (Milford, Mass.) including what stood as the game-winner with 25 seconds left in the extra frame to give the Wildcats a thrilling 13-12 victory in Thursday evening's non-conference women's lacrosse game.

With the loss, Elms slips to 0-13 on the season, while Wheelock notches its first win of the season to improve to 1-11 overall.

With the score set at 9-9 following Narey's fifth score of the game for Elms to force an extra period of play, Wheelock notched a pair of goals early in overtime as Kylie Hefford (Exeter, N.H.) and Ferrante tallied back-to-back markers to give the Wildcats an 11-9 edge.

The Blazers responded as freshman attacker Elisha Godbout (South Hadley, Mass.) scored an unassisted goal, followed by senior attacker Emily Walsh's (Hadley, Mass.) free position goal which knotted the game at 11-11.

Wheelock's Katie Gavin (Manchester-By-The-Sea, Mass.) and Elms' junior attacker Kaitlyn Harrington (East Longmeadow, Mass.) traded goals to lift the score to 12-12 with just over a minute to play before Ferrante found the back of the net for her third goal of the game with 25 seconds left to lift the Wildcats to a thrilling, hard-fought overtime victory over the Blazers, 13-12.

Narey won six draws in addition to scoring a team-high five goals, while Harrington finished with four goals and four groundballs in the losing effort. Elms' senior goaltender Rachel Schrutt (Chicopee, Mass.) turned away 11 shots despite the setback.

Gavin scored six of Wheelock's 13 goals in the game and Ferrante chipped in three scoring strikes, while Jessica Hersom (Sanford, Maine) scooped six groundballs in the winning effort.

Alanna Pihl (Franconia, N.H.) made nine saves and earned her first victory between the pipes this season.

Elms led by as many as two goals twice during the opening 30 minutes of play as Harrington scored three of her four goals in the first half. The Blazers took a 6-5 lead into halftime before the Wildcats edged Elms on the scoreboard, 4-3 in the second half to send the game to a third stanza.

Elms returns to conference action on Wednesday, April 25 at Worcester State University at 7:00 p.m.
