Butt, Meeker Garner NECC Weekly Awards

ATTLEBORO, Mass. – Elms College sophomore third baseman Rachel Butt (Agawam, Mass.) and senior pitcher Destinee Meeker (Bantam, Conn.) earned New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) weekly honors in softball as announced by the league on Monday.

Butt was named NECC Hitter of the Week after going 5 for 9 with three doubles, two runs batted in and four runs scored to help lift the Blazers to a 3-0 week that included a doubleheader sweep of Newbury College in its NECC opener. Butt hit .556 for the week and added a walk and two stolen bases en route to her first weekly accolade of the season.

Meeker picked up a pair of wins in the circle and was named the NECC Pitcher of the Week. Meeker tossed a three-hitter and earned a non-conference win over Smith College, before helping the Blazers to an 8-0 mercy rule victory (5 innings) over Newbury in game one of the twinbill. Against the Nighthawks, Meeker fanned five batters to secure the win. This is her first weekly honor of the 2011 campaign.
