Box Score

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Elms College senior catcher Tiffany Williams (Berlin, Conn.) went 2 for 3 with two RBI from the dish and the Blazers orchestrated a four-run rally in the fifth, but WPI held on to an 8-5 victory in Tuesday morning’s softball game at the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, Fla.

With the loss, Elms falls to 0-5 on the season, while WPI improves to 4-1 overall.

Trailing 7-1 heading to the top of the fifth frame, Elms exploded for four runs, sparked by back-to-back one-out base hits by senior right fielder Kim Lastowski (Turners Falls, Mass.) and sophomore third baseman Kelly Callahan (Monson, Mass.). Freshman designated player Sarah Buckley (Wilbraham, Mass.) reached on a fielder’s choice to load the bases, and a pinch-hit RBI single to left by freshman Rachel Butt (Agawam, Mass.) plated the first run of the stanza for the Blazers. Following a foul out, sophomore first baseman Alicia Campbell (Stockbridge, Mass.) smashed a two-run single to center, sending Buckley and Campbell home and Butt to second to cut Elms’ deficit to 7-4. Williams knocked an RBI base hit into center and a WPI throwing miscue on the play allowed both Williams and Campbell to move into scoring position. Engineers’ pitcher Christa Coscia (Lakeville, Mass.) forced a groundout to end the inning with WPI clinging to a 7-5 lead.

In the bottom of the sixth frame, WPI’s Allie Roche (Chelmsford, Mass.) drove in Erin Flaherty (Stoughton, Mass.) to give the Engineers an 8-5 lead. From there, Katherine Fitton (Lebanon, Conn.) who entered in relief in the top of the sixth inning, tossed two scoreless innings to preserve the win and earn her first save of the season.

The Engineers extended a 1-0 lead in the third to a 7-1 lead by scoring three runs in both the third and fourth stanzas.

Coscia hurled a pair of strikeouts in five innings en route to her second win to improve to 2-0 on the season. Erin Saari (Brookline, N.H.) provided the offensive power, going 3 for 4 at the dish, while Roche finished with two RBI in the win.

Lastowski and Williams each notched a pair of hits in the losing effort, while Williams and Campbell drove in two runs each.

Sophomore right-hander Courtney Hampton (Westfield, Mass.) suffered the loss, but tossed four strikeouts in six innings of work in the circle.

Elms returns to Gene Cusic Classic action on Tuesday, with a 1:00 p.m. contest against North Park.
