Men’s and Women’s Swimming Split at St. Joseph’s College (Maine)
STANDISH, Maine – The Elms College men's team used a win in the final event – the 200-yard freestyle relay – to complete a 126-118 victory over St. Joseph's College (Maine), and the women's team suffered a 110-101 loss to the Monks during Saturday's swim meet in Standish, Maine.
With the win, the men's team improves to 2-0 on the season while the women's squad moves to 1-2 overall.
On the men's side, freshman Stephen Lynch (Madison, Conn.) swam to a first place finish in the 200-yard freestyle (1:54.06) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:24.33) and junior Keegan Goan (Westbrook, Maine) added a trio of top finishes in the 100-yard butterfly (55.69), the 50-yard butterfly (24.94) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:11.22).
Junior Aaron Starke (Chicopee, Mass.) registered a time of 24.38 to win the 50-yard freestyle and freshman James Grippo (Longmeadow, Mass.) secured top honors in the 50-yard backstroke, powering to a mark of 28.72.
The Blazers won the meet on the final relay of the afternoon as Lynch, freshman Kyle Murphy (Holyoke, Mass.), sophomore Niels Thomsen (Southington, Conn.) and Starke posted a narrow victory in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:38.83), besting the Monks' time of 1:39.98.
For the women, senior Emalee Furtek (Ludlow, Mass.) glided to three triumphs in the 50-yard freestyle (27.51), the 50-yard butterfly (29.39) and the 100-yard individual medley (1:09.99).
Junior Devon DeGrazia (Westport, Mass.) touched the wall first in the 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard freestyle and the 500-yard freestyle with respective times of 2:06.25, 57.81 and 5:42.90.
Senior Tricia Ruell (Chicopee, Mass.) won the 100-yard backstroke 1:15.24 and junior Abigail Wingfield (Northampton, Mass.) captured first place in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:32.99.
The women's team returns to action on Tuesday, Nov. 13 with a 7:00 p.m. home meet against Smith College at 7:00 p.m. at Partyka Natatorium, and both teams are back in the pool on Saturday, Nov. 17 when they host Colby-Sawyer College at 1:00 p.m.
