Box Score

NEWTON, Mass. – Elms College senior forward Chris Silva (Chicopee, Mass.) connected for a penalty kick goal in the 76th minute of action to spark the Blazers to a 1-0 victory over Mount Ida College in Thursday afternoon's non-conference men's soccer game.

The win marks the first of the 2010 campaign for Elms as it improves to 1-10-2 overall. Mount Ida meanwhile, falls to 1-12 on the season.

After playing 75 minutes of scoreless soccer, Elms scored the game's first and only goal when Silva lined up a penalty kick opportunity and blasted the ball past Mount Ida goalkeeper Steve Enright (South Kingston, R.I.) to give the Blazers a 1-0 lead.

The Mustangs had a pair of opportunities to equalize late in the contest as Phil Basile (Valatie, N.Y.) drilled a shot wide of the net at the 87:33 mark and Chris MacKinnon (Sudbury, Mass.) headed the ball off the crossbar with 1:05 remaining in regulation preserving the 1-0 victory for Elms.

The sides displayed even offense throughout the contest as Mount Ida finished with eight shots on net while Elms fired seven shots on target.

Blazers' junior goalkeeper Ryan Sullivan (Agawam, Mass.) kept the Mustangs off balance the entire game notching four saves in each frame to total eight on the day.

Enright was efficient despite the one goal as he registered six saves in the losing effort.

Elms returns to New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) action on Saturday, Oct. 16 when it hosts Becker College. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m. at Leary Field.
