Men's Basketball Lose a Tough Battle to the Cadets at Home

CHICOPEE, Mass. - The Elms College Men's Basketball hosted Norwich University for a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) matchup Tuesday evening at Picknelly Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Norwich would begin the contest with an early 5-0 lead, but Elms would strike back after a steal and a layup from junior forward RJ Mayfield (Springfield, Mass.), a three-point shot by sophomore guard Andrew Ciaglo (Hadley, Mass.), after receiving a pass from junior guard Aden Goffe (New Haven, Conn.), and a jump shot by Goffe, to bring to the score to 9-7. The Cadets would continue to add to their lead, but the Blazers efforts would not be ignored, after senior guard Aaron Sanchez (the Bronx, N.Y.) made a layup and a tip-in, Goffe would sink another jump shot, a three-point shot, a layup, and a tip-in, Mayfield would make a tip-in, a layup by junior center/guard/forward Edgardo Jacob Cancel (Northampton, Mass.), Bridgeman would make a jump shot and a block. Unfortunately, even with the late rally, Norwich would maintain their lead, 38-26, going into the halftime break.

The second half would begin with Ciaglo connecting with Bridgeman to make a layup for the first basket of the half. The Elms offense would then continue their next possession with a layup from Sanches to make the score 38-30, but the Cadets would continue to stretch their lead over the home side. As the half continue, Goffe would make a free throw and a steal, Sanchez would score on back-to-back layups, senior forward/center Addison Phifer would make a three-pointer, after finding a pass from junior forward Adam Sarlan (Chicopee, Mass.), Sarlan would add a steal, but the Norwich offense would continue to control the momentum of the game. After a large number of substitutions were made, the Blazers would hit a three-point shot from Ciaglo, a layup and a tip-in by Mayfield, and a pair of jump shots from Goffe and Sanchez, along with a free throw shot by Sanchez, that would bring the score to within five points. But unfortunately, the Cadets would continue to add upon their lead. As the clock began to wind down to its final minutes, Elms would continue to maintain their presence on both ends of the court, with Goffe making another jump shot and Bridgeman blocking a shot on their opponent's next possession. Goffe would record a jump shot, a three-pointer, and a steal, along with two layups and a free throw from Sanchez, but Norwich would defeat the Blazers 70-62 on their home court.
