HOW IT HAPPENED
Elms would be the first to score after senior guard/forward Aaron Sanchez (the Bronx, N.Y.) found an open sophomore guard Andrew Ciaglo (Hadley, Mass.) for a jump shot which would be quickly followed by a steal by Ciaglo to draw a foul and make a pair of free throw attempts. Curry would then get on the board by a dunk, but the Blazers would then see senior guard Kishaun Cole (Sleepy Hollow, N.Y.) make a layup followed by a three-point shot, assisted by Sanchez, to take a seven point lead. The Colonels would cut the lead down to four points, but a steal by Cole would lead into a three-pointer by Ciaglo to keep the lead in favor of Elms. The Blazers defense would remain strong as they would force Curry to make turnovers that would lead into points, including a pair of jump shots by Sanchez and a three-point shot by Ciaglo. The Elms defense would also see steals by graduate forward Neilon Bridgeman (Brooklyn, N.Y.), juniors Max Rolnick (Vaughan, Ontario), and Edgardo Jacob Cancel (Northampton, Mass.), but the Colonels would begin to find ways to score before the end of the half. A three-pointers by Ciaglo, Cole, and junior forward RJ Mayfield (Springfield, Mass.), assisted by junior guard Aden Goffe (New Haven, Conn.), graduate guard Teron Griffin (Harlem, N.Y.), and Ciaglo, would help keep a 15-point lead for the Blazers, but Curry would begin capitalizing on the Blazers mistakes offensively to even the score as the horn blew for the end of the first half.
The Colonels would come out of the gate with the offensive advantage, outscoring Elms 5-2 in the opening two minutes. Sanchez and Cole would make back-to-back steals that would lead into points to the Blazers back the lead, 41-40, Curry would respond with a layup of their own, but Mayfield would cause a steal that would lead into a three-point shot by Griffin to put Elms back into the lead 44-42. The two cross-state opponents would battle for the remainder of the half. A jump shot by Mayfield and multiple layups by Cole, Sanchez, Griffin, and junior forward Adam Sarlan (Chicopee, Mass.) would give the Blazers a 69-67 lead in the final seconds of play, but as the final seconds ticked off, the Colonels would sink a game winning three-point shot, defeating Elms 70-69.
