Men’s Basketball Soars Past Daniel Webster College, 91-62

CHICOPEE, Mass. – Elms College junior forward Kenny Lockett (Atlanta, Ga.) scored a collegiate career-high 30 points on 11 of 13 shooting and hauled in 12 rebounds to help the Blazers post a 91-62 victory over Daniel Webster College in Saturday afternoon's New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) men's basketball game at Picknelly Arena.

With the win, Elms improves to 11-10 overall, 9-3 in conference action, while Daniel Webster moves to 12-7 overall, 5-5 in NECC play.

Lockett was tremendous in the contest hitting 11 of 13 shots from the field and a perfect 7 for 7 attempts from the free throw line to lead three Blazers in double figures. Guard Andre French (Torrington, Conn.) drained five three-pointers en route to 23 points, dished out three assists and recorded three steals, and senior forward Isaiah Odunlami (Providence, R.I.) netted 18 points, pulled down a game-best 13 rebounds and dished out five helpers to help pace the Blazers to victory.

Sophomore guard Derek Murphy (Columbia, Md.) added nine points – all from beyond the arc – in addition to handing out three assists as Elms shot 40.5-percent from the floor and owned a 56-34 advantage in rebounding.  Freshman forward Conny Ihearahu (Largo, Md.) added boards in the winning effort.

Daniel Webster was led by Daris Cosby (Albany, N.Y.) who knocked down five three-pointers of his own and finished with a team-best 19 points and six rebounds. Ray Farmer (Nashua, N.H.) was 6 of 9 from the field and poured in 15 points, Ryan Gauthier (Nashua, N.H.) chipped in 14 points, and Kevin Perez (Nashua, N.H.) totaled 11 points to give the Eagles four starters in double digits.

Aiden Collins (Paterson, N.J.) rounded up eight rebounds, Cosby swatted four shots, and Perez dished out four helpers in the losing effort for Daniel Webster.

In the first half, the sides exchanged leads four times early on before Elms posted an eight-point, 19-11 advantage following a French swish from long distance at the 11:59 mark. Gauthier answered for the Eagles with a layup and free throw after being fouled and Cosby sunk a pair of treys to cap a 9-2 run by Daniel Webster who pulled within one (21-20) with 9:53 to play in the stanza.

Elms maintained a slim advantage over the next 5:28 before using a 6-2 run over the final 4:25 of the frame to stake a 40-32 lead at halftime.

French led all scorers with 15 points at the break, while Lockett and Odunlami had 10 points each. Ihearahu notched 10 of his 11 caroms in the first 20 minutes.

In the second half, Perez made a pair of foul shots at the 19:04 mark to bring the Eagles to within six at 40-34 but a French layup followed by a triple from senior guard Dustin Trail (East Hartford, Conn.) helped Elms run its lead to double figures at 45-34 with 17:58 remaining in the contest.

A dunk by Lockett on a lob pass from French at the 15:25 mark set the score at 53-39 in favor of the Blazers and with just under 13 minutes to play, both teams put on a tremendous display of long-ball shooting as Murphy drilled a pair of three-pointers between three-point makes from Gauthier, Farmer and Cosby to set the score at 67-53 in favor of Elms with 11:04 on the clock.

From there, the Blazers continued to pull away eventually notching its 91-62 victory.

Elms returns to NECC play on Tuesday, February 4 when it hosts Wheelock College at 7:00 p.m. at Picknelly Arena.
