Men’s Basketball Falls to UMass-Dartmouth, 100-88

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Elms College senior forward Isaiah Odunlami (Providence, R.I.) scored a team-high 20 points to lead five Blazers in double figures, but UMass-Dartmouth used a game-high 26-point effort from Tucker Bouchard (Kingston, Mass.) to help spark the Corsairs to a 100-88 victory in Friday evening's non-conference men's basketball game during day one action of the Hampton Inn Classic in North Dartmouth, Mass.

With the loss, Elms begins its season 0-1 overall, while UMass-Dartmouth starts its season 1-0 overall. The Corsairs advance to face Colby College in the tournament championship game Saturday evening at 6:30 p.m., while the Blazers will square off against Anna Maria College at 4:30 p.m.

UMass-Dartmouth's Wale Abraham (Lynn, Mass.) recorded a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds and added six blocked shots, while Jake Laga (Northampton, Mass.) swished 17 points and reeled in nine boards. Ryan Walsh (North Dighton, Mass.) recorded 15 points and snagged six rebounds in the winning effort.

Elms was led by Odunlami who made 3 of 5 from three-point range en route to a team-best 20 points. Sophomore guard Jerry Buchanon (Windsor, Conn.) registered 17 points, while sophomore guard Derek Murphy (Columbia, Md.) netted 17 points off the bench. Junior forward Kenny Lockett (Atlanta, Ga.) generated double digit numbers in points and rebounds with 12 and 11 respectively.

Both teams traded blows in the first half with the Corsairs coming out on top at the break by a score of 43-40.

UMass Dartmouth increased its lead to 10 points on a Steven Handy (Oak Bluffs, Mass.) layup and free throw with 8:45 remaining in the game which set the score at 72-62. However that's as close as it got and the Corsairs won 100-88.

Elms knocked down nine shots from beyond the arc, edging UMass-Dartmouth which converted seven three-pointers. The Corsairs outrebounded the Blazers, 53-47 and hit on 31 of 38 from the free throw line (81.6-percent), while Elms shot just 52.5 percent from the charity stripe.
