Baseball Soars Past Newbury College, 14-1

BROCKTON, Mass. – Elms College sophomore shortstop Nolan Medeiros (Taunton, Mass.) drove in four runs and five Blazers collected two hits to help pace a 14-1 win over Newbury College in Sunday afternoon's New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) baseball action at Campanelli Stadium in Brockton, Mass.

With the win, Elms improves to 7-11 on the season, 3-3 in NECC action, while Newbury moves to 9-14 overall, 5-5 in league play.

After Elms took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second on an RBI single by freshman first baseman Jordan Zima (Berlin, Conn.) and an RBI hit by pitch issued to Medeiros, the Blazers pushed across seven runs in the top of the fifth and five runs in the top of the sixth to stake a 14-0 advantage.

Elms' senior designated hitter Sam Farnsworth (Westfield, Mass.) connected for an RBI double, freshman left fielder Tim Gelzinis (North Dighton, Mass.) drew an RBI walk, junior center fielder Brady Forrest (Hampden, Mass.) notched a two-run single, and senior catcher Zach Dreher (Naugatuck, Conn.) cracked a run-scoring single to highlight the seven-run fifth.

Medeiros drove in a pair on a double and Farnsworth added an RBI base hit to help spark a five-run sixth frame, while junior third baseman Geoff Frost (Ludlow, Mass.) and Zima each scored on a balk.

After seven scoreless innings on the hill from Blazers' freshman pitcher Cody Lemieux (Torrington, Conn.), Newbury finally pushed across a run in the bottom of the eighth when Ian Hruniak (Lutz, Fla.) scored on a fielder's choice by Ryan Zahornasky (Shelton, Conn.) to set the final score at 14-1.

Lemieux (1-1) was terrific in 8.0 innings of work. He fanned a pair of batters and scattered just five hits en route to his first collegiate victory. Junior reliever Sean Cavanaugh (Wilbraham, Mass.) pitched the final stanza and recorded a strikeout.

Frost registered a triple and was one of five Elms hitters to collect two hits in the win. Forrest, Dreher, Farnsworth, and senior fright fielder Alex King (Lebanon, Conn.) each had two hits.

CJ Ingraham (Georgetown, Mass.) had two hits for the Nighthawks in the losing effort, while Cameron D'Agostino (Salisbury, Mass.) (2-3) suffered the loss on the mound for Newbury.

Elms returns to NECC action on Tuesday, April 15 with a double header at Lesley University at 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.
