Baseball Falls to Wesleyan University (Conn.), 15-2

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Elms College sophomore second baseman Aedin Wadja (Lebanon, Conn.) was 2 for 4 with an RBI, but Wesleyan University (Conn.) used a seven-run seventh frame and a 3 for 6 effort at the plate from Jonathan Dennett (Great Neck, N.Y.) who also drove in five runs to help spark the Cardinals to a 15-2 victory in Wednesday evening's non-conference baseball game.

With the loss, Elms moves to 2-9 on the season, while Wesleyan improves to 12-5 overall.

After Wesleyan plated two runs in the bottom of the first, Elms cut the deficit in half with a run in the top of the third when junior third baseman Geoff Frost (Ludlow, Mass.) singled in junior center fielder Brady Forrest (Hampden, Mass.) to set the score at 2-1.

The Cardinals extended the lead back to two runs with a tally in the bottom of the third and then pushed across four in the home half of the fourth to stake a 7-1 advantage. A run in the fifth and a seven spot in the bottom of the seventh stanza increased the lead to 15-1.

Elms notched its second run of the contest in the top of the ninth inning when Wadja singled in senior designated hitter Sam Farnsworth (Westfield, Mass.) to set the final score at 15-2.

The Blazers were led by a two-hit effort from Farnsworth (2 for 3), while Frost and Wadja drove in a run each in the losing effort.

Sophomore starter Tom Weldon (Springfield, Mass.) suffered the loss in 4.2 innings of work and struck out four batters.

Dennett led Wesleyan with three hits and five RBI, while Ellis Schaefer (Newtown Square, Pa.) and Donnie Cimino (Westwood, N.J.) also added three hits each, combined to score six runs and each drove in a run. Sam Goodwin-Boyd (Florence, Mass.) drove in three runs, Guy Davidson (New York, N.Y.) plated two runs with a 2 for 6 effort at the plate and Nick Micieli (West Hartford, Conn.) added two hits in the winning effort.

The Cardinals used eight pitchers in the winning effort as the staff combined to allow just two runs on seven hits while notching eight strikeouts. Gavin Pittore (Roslindale, Mass.) earned the victory on the hill.

Elms returns to action on Saturday, April 5 when it hosts the University of Maine-Presque Isle in a three-game series. Double header action is set for 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. at MacKenzie Stadium in Holyoke, Mass.
