Baseball Falls to Baldwin Wallace University, 11-3

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Elms College baseball team fell to Badlwin Wallace University, 11-3 in its first game on day three of the Gene Cusic Classic on Monday afternoon in Fort Myers, Fla.

With the loss, Elms moves to 2-3 overall. The Blazers are back in action on Monday with a 3:00 p.m. contest against Monmouth (Ill.).

Baldwin Wallace used a four-run first inning and a five-run fifth frame to help secure its 11-3 victory. Yellow Jacket's starting pitcher Cory Waite (Willoughby, Ohio) tossed the first six innings and struck out five en route to his first win of the season. He allowed no runs and scattered just two hits.

Eric Murphy (Brook Park, Ohio) was 3 for 3 with an RBI, while Cole Nieto (Brunswick, Ohio) drove in three runs. Kyle Chontos (Pickerington, Ohio), Alex Green (Pickerington, Ohio) and Zach Ferster (Olmsted Falls, Ohio) each had a triple; and Chontos and Green added two RBI each in the winning effort.

Elms' sophomore second baseman Aedin Wadja (Lebanon, Conn.) was 4 for 4 with a double, while sophomore shortstop Nolan Medeiros (Taunton, Mass.) drove in a run with a base hit to center field in the top of the eighth inning to give the Blazers' their first run of the game. After a walk to senior catcher Zach Dreher (Naugatuck, Conn.) loaded the bases, senior designated hitter Sam Farnsworth (Westfield, Mass.) drove in a pair with a double to left center field setting the score to 11-3.

In the top of the ninth, freshman left fielder Tim Gelzinis (North Dighton, Mass.) hit a one-out single and moved to second when senior first baseman Alex King (Lebanon, Conn.) reached on an infield miscue. Wadja then singled to center sending King to second base and Gelzinis around third but he was thrown out trying to score to give Baldwin Wallace two outs in the frame.

Yellow Jacket's third reliever Connor Murphy (Westford, Mass.) then forced a game-ending groundout to seal the victory.

Elms' junior starting pitcher Sean Sinnott (Granby, Conn.) pitched the first four innings and allowed eight runs on nine hits and walked three batters. Sophomore reliever Kyle Bartlett (Huntington, Mass.) pitched the final four stanzas and allowed three runs (one earned) on two hits, struck out four hitters and walked two in the no-decision.
