Baseball Posts Split with St. Lawrence University

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Elms College baseball team posted a split with St. Lawrence University on Sunday afternoon, winning the first game 4-0 before falling 18-2 in the second game in day two action of the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, Fla.

With the split, Elms moves to 2-2 on the season.

In game one, Elms' senior pitcher Curtis LeBeau (Auburn, Mass.) was terrific in seven innings of work on the hill. He twirled a four-hit shutout with two strikeouts and three walks, and the Blazers allowed just one runner to reach third base.

Elms got on the board in the top of the third inning when sophomore second baseman Aedin Wadja (Lebanon, Conn.) reached on a one-out walk advanced to second on a single by junior right fielder Brady Forrest (Hampden, Mass.) and then scored on an RBI single by sophomore shortstop Nolan Medeiros (Taunton, Mass.). Forrest later scored on a base hit by senior designated hitter Sam Farnsworth (Westfield, Mass.) to give the Blazers a 2-0 lead.

In the top of the fourth frame, sophomore center fielder R.J. Lyrenmann (Glendale, Ariz.) and freshman first baseman Jordan Zima (Berlin, Conn.) each cracked singles and then scored on a two-run double by Forrest to give Elms a 4-0 lead.

From there, LeBeau allowed just three more base runners as Elms held on to its 4-0 victory.

In game two, St. Lawrence posted a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first before senior catcher Zach Dreher (Naugatuck, Conn.) delivered a sacrifice fly driving in Forrest who had reached with a leadoff double to start the bottom of the first pulling the Blazers to within one (2-1).

St. Lawrence then used a four-run second frame, and scored two more in the top of the third to stake an 8-1 lead.

Forrest led off the Blazers' third when he was hit by a pitch and he later scored, but that's all the offense Elms could get as the Saints scored three times in the fourth, four times in the fifth, and three more times in the sixth to complete its 18-2 win and preserve the split.

Elms' junior third baseman Geoff Frost (Ludlow, Mass.) hit singles in each game, while freshman Stephen Harrison (Southbury, Conn.) added a base hit in game two.

Blazers' sophomore pitcher Andrew Sadowski (Northampton, Mass.) suffered the game two loss on the mound and issued four strikeouts.

Elms is back in action at the Gene Cusic Classic on Monday, March 10 when it plays Baldwin Wallace at 12:00 p.m. and Monmouth (Ill.) at 3:00 p.m.
