Women's Volleyball Concludes 2024 Season at Colby-Sawyer Tri-Match with Lasell

NEW LONDON, N.H. - The Elms College Women's Volleyball team concluded the 2024 season in a conference tri-match against Lasell University and Colby-Sawyer College Saturday afternoon hosted by the Chargers.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Match 1 

The opening set would begin with the two conference opponents trading points, including kills by junior Alysha Izquierdo (Holyoke, Mass.) and sophomore Quiana Gibbs (Porterville, Cali.) along with a service ace sophomore Victoria Solis (Springfield, Mass.). Lasell would then score 12 of the next 13 points, to take a 20-8 lead. Elms would try to cut down the lead after kills from Izquierdo and Gibbs, but the Lasers would win the first set 25-11.

The second set would begin with an early Lasell lead, but the Blazers would see some offense after kills from senior Francesca Dirienzo (West Springfield, Mass.) and Gibbs, but the Lasers would then go on another point streak, scoring 11 of the next 12 points scored. Izquierdo and Dirienzo would both make kills, along with a block from Dirienzo, but Lasell would win the second set 25-10.

The third and final set would see the Blazers with an early 4-3 lead after kills from Dirienzo and Solis, along with a service ace by junior Jaylen Holman (Las Cruces, N.M.). The Lasers would then take the lead 6-4, Elms would see some offense after a kill and service ace from junior Angelica Marks (Miami, Fla.) and kills from Gibbs and Dirienzo, but Lasell would secure the sweep and defeat the Blazers 25-15.

Match 2

The start of the second match would start off with an early Colby-Sawyer 10-2 lead, with two kills from Izquierdo. The Chargers would continue to add to their lead scoring an additional nine points before Dirienzo made a kill to make the score 19-4, but Colby-Sawyer would win the first set 25-5.

The second set would begin with the two conference opponents trading points, seeing kills from Izquierdo and Marks, seeing a 3-3 tie. The Chargers would then score an additional seven points before a kill by Solis and a service ace by Izquierdo, then Colby-Sawyer would score an additional seven points. Elms would then rally to score 13 points, seeing kills from first year Olivia Rivera (Springfield, Mass.), Dirienzo, and sophomore Lillianna Simmons (Springfield, Mass.), but the rally would not be enough as the Chargers would win the second set 25-19.

The third set would see an early 11-4 Elms lead after a kill by Izquierdo and a service ace by Simmons. Colby-Sawyer tried to cut their opponent's lead, but the Blazers would create offensive and defensive strategies to keep the Chargers away, with the help from four kills by Izqueirdo and a block by Rivera. Colby-Sawyer would then rally back to bring the score to 20-21, but Elms would then put a stop to their opponent's offensive rally with the assistance of kills by Marks and Simmons to win the set 26-24 to make the match 2-1 in favor of the Chargers.

The fourth and final set would begin a 16 point rally by Colby-Sawyer. The Blazers would see a block from Dirienzo, a kill from Holman and a service ace by junior Alejandra Marin (Dorado, P.R.), but the Chargers would defeat Elms 25-8 to secure the match 3-1.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Izquierdo made a combined 11 kills, 10 kills, two assists, two blocks, and a service ace.

  • Holman created 26 assists, 14 digs, and a service ace.

  • Gibbs generated 15 digs and five kills.

  • Dirienzo had five kills and two digs.

  • Marks made five digs, three kills, a service ace, and an assist.

  • Simmons generated 11 digs, three kills, and service ace.

  • Solis had two kills, a dig, and a service ace.

  • Rivera made two kills and a block.

  • Marin made seven digs and a service ace.
