Women’s Volleyball Can’t Make it Over the Hump Against the Camels

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Elms College Women's Volleyball team competed in a non-conference match at Connecticut College Wednesday evening.

BASICS
Score: Elms College 0 (13,18, 16) | Connecticut College 3 (25, 25, 25)
Records: Blazers 0-7, 0-0 (GNAC) | Camels 5-0, 0-0 (NESCAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
The opening set would begin with the opposing teams trading lead back-and-forth, including a kill by junior Alysha Izquierdo (Holyoke, Mass.). Elms would then gain a short-lived lead with the assistance from a service ace from junior Angelica Marks (Miami, Fla.), but Connecticut would regain the lead and keep the Blazers at an arm's length distance. Elms would see kills from sophomores Victoria Solis (Springfield, Mass.) and Quiana Gibbs (Porterville, Cali.) and a service ace by junior Alejandra Marin (Dorado, Puerto Rico), but the Camels would win the first set 25-16.

The second set would start off with an early Elms lead with the help from a service ace by junior Jaylen Holman (Las Cruces, N.M.), but Connecticut would fight back and the two sides would again battle for the lead. Kills from Marks and Solis and a service ace by Marin would help the Blazers gain some momentum, but the Camels would keep a large enough distance to maintain their lead. Elms would show some offensive life late in the set, scoring six points, including three-straight kills by Marin, Izquierdo, and Gibbs, but the Camels would win the set 25-18.

The third and final set would begin with the opponents trading an early 1-1 lead with the help from a kill by Marks, but Connecticut would take offensive momentum from there. Kills from Izquierdo and sophomore Lillianna Simmons (Springfield, Mass.) and a service ace first-year Maria Codianni (Waterbury, Conn.) would give the Blazers some offensive life in the final set, but the Camels would secure the set and match 25-8.
