Women's Volleyball Unvictorious in Home Opener Against Eastern Connecticut

CHICOPEE, Mass. – The Elms College Women's Volleyball team competed in a non-conference match against Eastern Connecticut State University for their home opener Saturday afternoon at Picknelly Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The opening set would see Eastern Connecticut take an early lead. Junior Angelica Marks (Miami, Fla.) and sophomore Victoria Solis (Springfield, Mass.) would record the first points for Elms. The Warriors would continue to extend their lead, but the Blazers would see some offensive life after kills by sophomore Quiana Gibbs (Porterville, Cali.) and junior Alysha Izquierdo (Holyoke, Mass.), but ECSU would win the first set 25-11.

The second set would start with another kill by Marks, but the Warriors would regain the short-lived Elms lead. Eastern Connecticut would extensively extend their lead to 11-points, but the Blazers would go on a scoring streak to bring the match to within seven-points that saw three service aces by Marks, Solis, and junior Jaylen Holman (Las Cruces, N.M.) and kills by Gibbs and Solis. Unfortunately , the Warriors would take the second set 25-16.

The third and final set would again see a kill by Marks to open the set, then an eleven-point scoring streak by ECSU. Elms would see three kills by sophomore Lillianna Simmons (Springfield, Mass.) and a service ace by Marks, but the Warriors would continue to add to their lead and win the final set to secure the victory 25-10.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Holman recorded seven assists, nine digs, and a service ace.

  • Izquierdo made nine digs, a kill, and an assist.

  • Marin generated six digs, three assists, and a service ace.

  • Gibbs and Simmons both added five digs and three kills.

UP NEXT: The Elms Women's Volleyball team will take on Western New England University in a non-conference match on Wednesday, September 18th at 6 PM.
