Women’s Volleyball Sweeps the Blue Jays for Their First Win of the Season

CHICOPEE, Mass. - The Elms College Women's Volleyball team hosted the University of Saint Joseph, Conn. in a conference match Wednesday evening at Picknelly Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The opening set would see Elms take an early 4-2 lead after kills by junior Alysha Izquierdo (Holyoke, Mass.) and sophomore Lillianna Simmons (Springfield, Mass.) and a pair of service aces by Simmons. The two conference opponents would continue to trade points off of errors made by their opposition, but the Blazers would add further to their lead after kills by Simmons, Izquierdo, junior Angelica Marks (Miami, Fla.), and sophomore Quiana Gibbs (Porterville, Cali.). The Blue Jays would then quickly respond and take the lead from Elms, but the Blazers would rapidly take back their lead and win the opening set 25-23.

The second set would see USJ score first, but Elms would take the lead after kills by Gibbs, Marks, and senior Francesca Dirienzo (West Springfield, Mass.) and a pair of service aces by Marks. Izquierdo, Simmons, and Marks would add a few service aces along with kills by Izqierdo, Gibbs, and Marks would secure the second set for the Blazers 25-16.

The third and final set would see the two teams trade the points early, until a service ace by Marin and kills by Gibbs, Izquierdo, and junior Jaylen Holman (Las Cruces, N.M.) would extend Elms' lead and make sure the Blazers would capture their first win of the 2024 season.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Holman recorded 25 assists, 12 digs, and three kills.

  • Simmons added eight kills, five service aces, four digs, and an assist.

  • Gibbs generated ten digs, eight kills, and two assists.

  • Izquierdo made six kills and digs, a service ace and an assist.

  • With this win, Coach Brandon Hapgood would earn his first career collegiate win as a head coach.

UP NEXT: The Elms Women's Volleyball team will host Emmanuel College in a conference match up on Friday, September 27th at Picknelly Arena at 6 PM.
