Women's Volleyball Falls To Newbury On Senior Day

CHICOPEE, Mass. – The Elms College women's volleyball squad fell to visiting Newbury College, 3-0 (25-14, 25-22, 25-12), in a New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) contest at Picknelly Arena Saturday afternoon. The Blazers wrap up the 2016 campaign with a 5-20 record and a 2-6 mark in the NECC, while Newbury improves to 7-1 in conference play, and 10-9 overall.

The Nighthawks jumped to a 7-1 lead in the first set en route to a 25-14 victory in the first set. The Blazers bounced back in the second set, erasing an early 9-1 hole to pull within four points, 18-14, and even two points, 24-22, but Newbury held off the Blazers for the 25-22 win. Play was back-and-forth during the third set with Newbury owning a 10-7 advantage, and then tacked on seven straight points to propel to the 25-12 win.

Elms sophomore Danielle Redding (Las Vegas, Nev.) led the Blazers attack with a team-high six kills with eight digs and two aces. Freshman Hannah Adams (Deerfield, Mass.) added five kills with 12 digs, while freshman Haley Asselin (South Hadley, Mass.) chipped in three kills. Sophomore Caroline Locke (West Springfield, Mass.) grabbed a team-high 14 digs with two aces, and senior Carolyn Campbell (Millers Falls, Mass.) tallied 13 assists and seven digs.

The Newbury attack was powered by senior Courtney Banks (Corona, Calif.) with a double-double effort of a match-high 11 kills with 10 digs. Senior Gabby Aldaco (Springdale, Ark.) posted nine kills, 13 digs and four aces, while senior Kataya Sykes (Brockton, Mass.) had eight kills and two solo blocks. Junior Marlen Reynoso (Springdale, Ark.) dished out a match-high 29 assists with nine digs, and junior Julia Leggett (Longview, Wash.) snared a match-high 19 digs in the win.

The Blazers honored their two departing seniors, Campbell and Alicia Beaupre (Belchertown, Mass.), in a pre-game ceremony.

The Blazers have concluded play for the 2016 season. The Nighthawks advances to host a quarterfinal match in the 2016 New England Collegiate Conference Championship Tournament Tuesday night.
