PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Elms College women's volleyball team suffered a 3-0 (25-10, 25-7, 25-13) setback to host Plattsburgh State in their opening match at the 2016 Best Western Plus-Ground Round Cardinal Classic at Memorial Hall Friday night. The Blazers slide to 1-7 overall, while the Cardinals move to 5-5 on the season.

In the first set, the Blazers grabbed a 3-2 lead behind a kill from sophomore Danielle Redding (Las Vegas, Nev.), but the Cardinals raced ahead with a 8-1 run featuring a pair of kills from freshman Hunter Grotjohn (Scottsdale, Ariz. ) and freshman Dani Borunda (Salt Lake City, Utah) to take a 10-4 lead. After the sides traded points, the Cardinals closed the set with four straight points to take the 25-10 win.

Plattsburgh secured a 6-1 lead to open the second set behind a pair of kills from sophomore Sam Colombo (Patchogue, N.Y.). Freshmen Haley Asselin (South Hadley, Mass.) and Hannah Adams (Deerfield, Mass.) tallied back-to-back kills to cut the gap in half, 12-6, but the Cardinals orchestrated a 13-1 run behind a trio of kills from Colombo to lock up the 25-7 win.

The third set opened with back-and-forth play with the Cardinals taking a 6-4 lead on three kills by Colombo. Plattsburgh pushed ahead 13-7 on a pair of strike from Colombo and senior Lexi Pascal (Warwick, N.Y.). Asselin and Redding delivered consecutive kills to whittle down the Cardinals advantage, followed by errors by the Cardinals to make it a 14-11 match. Plattsburgh used a 5-2 run to rebuild separation, and then rattled off seven straight points to close out the 25-13 win.

The Blazers attack was paced by Asselin with a team-high four kills and four digs. Redding added three kills and three digs, while Adams grabbed a team-high six digs with a kill.
