Women's Soccer Suffers First Loss of 2015

ONEONTA, NY – A goal from freshman Madison Miller (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) in the 10th minute proved to be the difference as Hartwick's women's soccer team defeated previously unbeaten Elms College (3-1) by a final score of 1-0 on Saturday in the opening round of the 12th Annual Erinn K. Brozman Memorial Cup.
           
With the win, Hartwick starts the season 4-0 for the first time since 1990. The Hawks also have not been scored upon this season, and extended their shutout streak to 360 minutes.
           
Miller scored her first college goal with a shot following a corner kick fromAllyson Daniels (Pembroke, NH/Pembroke Academy) at 9:57. The first half was dominated by the Hawks as they out-shot the visiting Blazers by a 9-0 margin.
           
The second half was a little more even with both teams registering four shots. Of the Hawks' four shots, only Cami Cleaveland's (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) was on target which forced a save from Elms' keeper Alexa Rinaudo.
           
Kelsey Shea's shot in the 75th minute was the Blazers' lone shot on goal all day. The Hawks kept them from taking another attempt at goal over the final 15 minutes.
           
Megan McGillycuddy (Glenville, NY/Scotia-Glenville), who made the one second-half save, earned the shutout, which was her third straight. She has not been scored on in her 350 minutes in the Hawks' goal over the first four games.
           
Hartwick will play Johnson & Wales University, a 4-1 winner over Utica in the day's first game, tomorrow at 4 p.m. for the cup title. The Hawks are the defending champions and are looking for their fourth crown overall and third in the last four seasons.
