Rhode Island College Outlasts Women's Lacrosse

CHICOPEE, Mass. –The Elms College women's lacrosse team dropped a non-conference matchup to the visiting Rhode Island College, 18-14, at Leary Field Tuesday night. With the loss the Blazers fall to 4-7 on the season while the Anchorwomen climb to 4-5 overall.

Both squads began the contest honing in on high pressure attacks as the first half played out 12 back to back goals from both teams, in turn posting a 6-6 scoreboard at the 13:09 tab. The initial tally of the contest was produced off the stick of Tess Bradley (Tiverton, R.I.) for the Anchorwomen just 31 seconds into the first half, which was quickly followed by a Jackie Soucia (Belchertown, Mass.) score off a free position opportunity 30 seconds later.  The Blazers stint was headed by Vanessa Vurno (Salem, Conn.) and Jillian Pirog (Ludlow, Mass.) capturing two goals apiece to light up the notched scoreboard. However, beginning at 9:26 the Anchorwomen would take the reins producing a seven goal uncontested run. The stint was headed by Alison Nolan (Topsham, ME.) as she captured two goals and an assist to close out the half for Rhode Island leaving the Anchorwomen with a 13-6 scoreboard.

Nolan quickly struck again to start off the second for Rhode Island capturing a free position marker a minute into the half. From there the Blazers would begin to push back gaining momentum off of a three goal stint which included two Vurno bullets along with an Ashley Cava (Wilbraham, Mass.) tally to bring the Blazers within five. Rhode Island continued to test the waters racking up another two scores from Betsey Heidel (Warwick, R.I.) and Bradley to further extend their lead. Elms never gave up, the squad rallied and secured five more goals before the end of the second with their last tally coming in with 23 seconds remaining off the stick of Cava. Despite Blazer efforts the Anchorwomen were able to go home with the victory ending the evening with an 18-14 scoreboard.

Julia Eaton (Cumberland, R.I.) made 14 saves for Rhode Island, while Octavia McAllister (Springfield, Mass.) made 10 saves for Elms.

The Blazers return back to action Thursday April 14th when they play host to Mass Maritime Academy at 7:00pm, while the Anchorwomen face off against Western Connecticut April 16th at home for a 1:00pm start.
