Women's Basketball Woes Continue with Loss to Gordon

WENHAM, Mass. - The Elms College Women's Basketball traveled to Gordon College in a non-conference matchup Saturday afternoon.

BASICS
Score: Elms College 39 | Gordon College 69
Records: Blazers 2-3, 0-0 (GNAC) | Fighting Scots 2-2, 0-0 (CNE)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Elms would be the first to score after graduate guard Rahmia Johnston (Newton, Conn.) would make a layup during their first possession, followed by a three-point play by first year forward/center Mary Turco (Winthrop, Mass.) that would include a layup to draw a foul and a free throw shot. The Blazers would keep the Fighting Scots on the backs of their feet after junior forward Jenny Gorski (Vernon, Conn.) would also make a layup of her own after receiving a pass from sophomore Jade Lewis (Orlando, Fla.) to increase their lead to 7-0. The Elms efforts were not only seen from the offensive end of the court, but also on the defensive end with a block by Turco to keep Gordon from scoring their first basket of the game. The Blazers offense would continue their progression after Lewis would find an open Johnston for a three-point shot, but the Fighting Scots offense would score their first baskets shortly thereafter and begin a scoring run to bring the game to within two points, to make the score 10-8. The intrastate opponents would both add to their score after successful free throw attempts, but sophomore guard/forward Shea Barron (Wallingford, Conn.) would make a jump shot to help her team increase their lead. But as the final minutes wound off the clock of the opening quarter, Gordon would capitalize offensively by scoring back-to-back free throws and a three point shot, to gain the lead for the first time, 14-13, going into the second quarter. The Fighting Scots would carry their late momentum into the next quarter, scoring a layup in the first possession, but the Blazers would tie the game 18-18, after a layup by Turco and a three-pointer by junior guard Kelly LeBel (Tolland, Conn.), that would be assisted by Johntson. Gordon would take back soon thereafter, with the assistance of a three-point shot and a layup, but a layup by Barron and a block made by Johnston would keep Elms within three points of tying the game again. A steal by Barron would give the Blazers a moment of hope late in the second quarter, but a pair of three-pointers and a layup by the Fighting Scots would keep those hopes at bay and help Gordon hold the lead going into the halftime break by a ten-point lead, 31-21.

Elms would come out of the halftime break with a rejuvenated energy as they would cut down their opponent's lead to five points, after a layup and block by Turco and a three-point shot from Lewis, but the Fighting Scots would regain momentum, as they scored an additional 18 points. A steal by Turco and a late jump shot from LeBel would give the Blazers a push, but Gordon would maintain their 58-29 heading into the final quarter. The Fighting Scots would look to add to their lead early, but LeBel would spoil that by recording a steal during the first possession, but that would result unsuccessfully for Elms. Gordon would continue to add to their lead by five points, but Lewis would make a steal of her own that would lead to a layup from Turco, followed by a three-point shot by first year guard Autumn Koch (Goldsboro, Penn.). The Fighting Scots would continue to add to their lead, and would be too much for the Blazers, as Gordon would defeat Elms by 30 points, 69-39.
