First Year Fridays: Women’s Basketball

First Year Fridays: Women’s Basketball

Chicopee, MA - With COVID-19 stalling our fall and winter seasons, the Elms College Athletic Department will be showcasing our first year Blazers every Friday. Next up is our Women's Basketball program. Follow along and get to know more about your fellow Blazers!

The Women's Basketball program brought in two new players in 2020, here is a little something about each STUDENT-athlete.

Coach Proulx reflected on the programs first years. "We are so excited about the addition of Sadie and Rahmia, she said. "They both have made such a substantial difference in our program already and will be building blocks for our program moving forward. Rahmia has come in and really taken ownership over the PG position. She plays with a sense of tenacity and toughness and I can't wait for her to lead us moving forward. Sadie brings to us the unique combination of being able to play inside and out with her height, strength and ability from the 3 pt line. We are thrilled with the way they have taken on this unique first year season and can't wait to see what the future holds!"

Sadie Hunt

Position: Forward

Highschool/Hometown: Sturgis East, Sandwich High/Sandwich, MA

Favorite high school sports memory: My sophomore year senior game at sturgis, the team played great and it was by far my favourite night being able to bond with my teammates.

What brought you to Elms College? Elms college brought me in due to its fun filled atmosphere as well as great staff and an awesome basketball team.

What made Elms stick out to you more than other college interests? Elms stuck out to me because of its small size of classes and overall school. Large colleges are overwhelming for me and I dont do well in large classes so Elms was a perfect fit for me.

What are your pre-game rituals? My pregame ritual consists of stretching and strapping up my ankles with my old sweaty ankle braces, nothing too special.

What's a quote you live by and why? "The way to get started is to quit talking and begin doing" -Walt Disney. From personal experience I know that sitting on your bum and dreaming of being something will never get you there so this quote helps motivate me to get up and be a better me.

Who inspires you to be the driven student-athlete you are today? Most people would say some famous basketball player like Lebron James or Steph Curry, but personally my parents are what drives me. At the end of the day coming home from a game or after a practice I just want to make them proud and see that all those hours of driving me to practice was worth it in the end. I want them to see that im putting in effort just as they have for this long ride with basketball.

Rahmia Johnston

Position- Guard

High School/Hometown- Saint Joseph High School, Trumbull CT

High School Career Stats- 14 points 7 rebounds 5 assists 2 steals

Other sports: volleyball

Favorite High School sports related memory- We would go on 2 overnight trips every season and all get together for dinner and in our hotel rooms and hang out for hours. My favorite memory is when we would do a scavenger hunt throughout the hotel and the first group to complete their hunt had to send their senior captain in the pool fully clothed and win the hunt for their group.

What brought you to Elms College? What brought me to Elms was the family atmosphere and the close community. As well as this, I was super excited to play basketball.

What made Elms stick out to you more than other college interests? What made Elms stick out to me the most was the relationship that you build with your professors and with the people around you. They make you feel like you matter and that you are more than just a number, unlike the bigger schools I applied to.

What are your pre-game rituals? Some of my pre-game rituals are doing yoga the morning of game days, meditating and listening to music.

What's a quote you live by and why? A quote I live by is have courage and be kind. I live by this quote because in the world we live in today it takes a lot of courage to do what is right and what needs to be done. We could all use a little extra kindness and a reminder to always be kind.

Who inspires you to be the driven student-athlete you are today? My mom inspires me to be who I am today. She is the strongest, most beautiful, hardworking and bravest woman I have ever known. I would be lucky to be half the woman she is one day, so everything I do is to strive to be like her and make her proud.
