Women's Basketball Blasts Lesley On The Road

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Elms College women's basketball team cruised their way to victory Wednesday evening defeating Lesley, 88-49, in New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) action. With the win the Blazers rise to 11-10 on the season and 10-4 in the conference, while the Lynx fall to 1-21 overall and 0-15 in the NECC.

The Blazers started the night on a hot note with Alexandra Marques (Newington, Conn.) connecting for two, the first of many for Elms. From there the Blazers would charge ahead on a ten point stint with JC Pickett (Chicopee, Mass.) and Mackenzie LaRochelle (Chicopee, Mass.) each going two-for-two at the charity stripe. Emily Meade (Derry, NH.) would get Lesley on the board at the 5:58 mark finding the backboard for an easy two. Marques would respond finding an opening for a quick bucket to up the score 12-2 in favor of the Blazers. Elms would keep their momentum going surging ahead to collect eight more tallies in the first to head into the second holding a 20-6 advantage.

At the start of the second the Blazers kept their fast play going with Erin O'Donnell (Glenmont, N.Y.) nailing a jumper nine seconds into the quarter to set the pace. From there Emily Burr (East Hartford, Conn.) would connect deep from the three point zone creating a 19 point gap for the Lynx. Anetha Rathjens (Sudbury, Mass.) would light up the scoreboard in Lesley's favor with a layup only to be pushed back by an O'Donnell jumper seconds later keeping the Blazers energy intact. Courtney Goggin (Cheshire, Conn.) sunk Lesley's first three at the 7:20 tally creating a 27-13 Elms score, however the Blazers pushed back as LaRochelle connected for two then continued on to hit the bonus basket after being sent to the stripe on a Ari Dimou (Manchester, NH.) foul. Elms went on to capture an eight point run led by Kayla Aberdale (Housatonic, Mass.) sinking her first three of the night at the 4:27 mark. Despite Lesley's attempted comeback the Blazers would nurse their lead straight into the locker room holding a 39-17 score.

Out of the locker room the Blazers struck again with Mariah Brown (Windsor Locks, Conn.) netting the first two of the quarter. Marques would follow with back to back layups for the Elms squad before Lesley would strike with a Theresa Pereira (Hopedale, Mass.) layup. The Blazers continued to dominate the quarter netting 25 points with big plays from Brown going 3-for-3 to tally seven from the field as well as Marques going 3-for-4 collecting six to head into the fourth.

Elms entered the fourth owning a 64-35 scoreboard. LaRochelle initiated the first Blazer bucket of the quarter collecting an easy layup followed by Pickett tabbing another two into the Elm's arsenal. Goggin fired a three for the Lynx in an aim to keep them alive, however the Blazers struck back with LaRochelle nabbing six in the quarter going 3- for -5 from the field as well as Aberdale collecting another three to end the night with an 88-49 Elms score.

The Blazers were paced by Marques totaling a game high 19 points going 9-for-15 on the floor while collecting seven rebounds. LaRochelle secured a double – double totaling 13 points and 11 rebounds for Elms. 

The Lynx were paced by Pereira tallying 19 points and 6 rebounds. Goggin secured nine for Lesley in the effort.

The Blazers totaled 43.0% from the field (34-79), including 30.0% from the three-point line (3-10), and 77.3% from the foul line (17-22). Lesley shot 31.0% from the floor (18-58), 29.4% from three point range (5-17), and 61.5% from the foul line (8-13).

The Blazers will travel to Regis for a conference matchup Saturday, February 13th at 2:00 p.m. The Lynx will travel to Mitchell February 13th   for a 3:00p.m start.
