Softball Clubs Wheelock in NECC Twinbill

CHICOPEE, Mass. – The Elms College softball team swept the visiting Wheelock College Wildcats in a New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) double header Saturday afternoon at the Cheryl R. Condon Field. The Blazers won, 9-0 during the first contest and 11-2 in the second to close out the duo. Elms shifts to 13-12 on the season and 7-3 in conference action, while the Wildcats fall to 4-14 overall and 3-7 in NECC play.

 Game 1: Elms 9, Wheelock 10 (5 Innings)

The Blazers were able to load up the scoreboard early tallying four runs in the first headed by a Keyla Oliveras (Springfield, Mass) triple to center field. From there A Catharine Wrang (Middletown, Conn.) bunt rang in Oliveras tacking on the first tally followed by a Tea Sullivan (Dracut, Mass) single to advance Wrang to the second base bag. Raeanna Tumel (Stafford, Conn.) took control at bat bombing a grounder down the right field line brining home Wrang. The stint would end on an Erin O'Donnell (Glenmont, NY.) single to first that sent Sullivan and Tumel home for Elms after a Wildcat error.

The Blazers continued their scoring stretch in the third with O'Donnell and Kiersten Skinner (South Windsor, Conn.) both touching home for Elms off of O'Donnell and Madison Messier (Warren, Mass.) singles posting a 6-0 scoreboard.

The Blazers would continue to keep the Wildcats scoreless, posting three more runs throughout the bottom of the fourth with Wrang starting off the score with a single and eventually stealing second and advancing home on a wild pitch. Taylor Skinner (South Windsor, Conn.) and Tumel would both also reach home for Elms sending the Blazers into game two with the victory.

The Blazers were led by O'Donnell with three RBI's and three hits on the contest.

 

Game 2: Elms 11, Wheelock 2 (Five Innings)

In game two, the Wildcats game out swinging snatching a quick 2-0 lead off with a Emma Spencer (Thomaston, Maine)  single followed by a Samantha Leahon (Castleton, NY) single and a Dominique DelBene (Peabody, Mass.) double to center field that rang in Rachael Simpson (Littleton, Mass.) and Spencer for Wheelock.

The Blazers secured two runs throughout the first as well with Oliveras starting large for Elms tripling down the right field line followed by a Wrang single to bring her home. Wrang continued on to steal second and advance to third on a wild pitch. From there she would score on a Kacey Gifford (Suffield, Conn.) groundout to second to tie the contest.

The Blazers continued on to tally nine more runs throughout the contest, including eight in the bottom of the fourth. The eight run stint included an Oliveras triple that brought in Skinner as well as Oliveras after an error on the pitcher gave her opportunity to score. Sullivan went on to blast one out of the park securing the home run for elms and in turn sent home Gifford as well. The Blazers walked away with the victory owning an 11-2 scoreboard as the Wildcats were unable to respond.

Oliveras led in RBI's with three followed by Gifford, Sullivan, and O'Donnell with two apiece.  

The Blazers will return to action Sunday, April 17th at 1:00 p.m. for a conference road trip at Bay Path. The Wildcats will play Lesley at home April 17th at 10:00 a.m..
