NAPLES, Fla. – The Elms College softball team was outslugged in a pair of games to close the Blazers run at the 2016 Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic Wednesday morning. The Blazers fell to Geneva College, 7-1, and then lost to the University of Pittsburgh-Bradford, 7-3, in the nightcap.

Game 1: Geneva 7, Elms 1

After holding the Blazers scoreless for three innings, the Golden Tornadoes dealt the first blow in the bottom of the first on a two-out, RBI single from junior Clara Sevy (Sykesville, Md.) to put Geneva up 1-0. Elms evened the score in the top of the fourth as junior Kacey Gifford (Suffield, Conn.) led the frame off with a single, and then scored on a fielding miscue by Geneva to make it 1-1.

The Golden Tornadoes regained a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth with freshman Haley Sainato (New Castle, Pa.) knocking a leadoff single, stealing second, and then scoring on an RBI single from junior Lucia Fee (Wampum, Pa.).

Geneva padded their lead in the bottom of the sixth. With two outs, Sainato laced a two-run double to left field, followed by a two-run single by Sevy to push the advantage to 6-1. Fee drove in Sevy with an RBI single to left field to send the Golden Tornadoes to the 7-1 win.

Elms freshman Raeanna Tumel (2-1; Stafford, Conn.) suffered her first loss of the season, allowing seven runs on 13 hits with three strikeouts. Geneva freshman Emily Keslar (2-0; Mt. Pleasant, Pa.) earned the win, surrendering one run on four hits with seven strikeouts.

Game 2: Pitt.-Bradford 7, Elms 3

In game two, the Panthers cracked the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI sacrifice fly from senior Meagan Hillard (Bradford, Pa.). The Blazers pulled ahead in the top of the second as back-to-back singles from sophomore Elizabeth Olszewski (Canterbury, Conn.) and freshman Madison Messier (Warren, Mass.) and a walk to freshman Samantha Marty (West Brookfield, Mass.) loaded the bases. Freshman Kayla Doherty (Plaistow, N.H.) delivered an RBI sacrifice fly, followed by an RBI single from junior Tessa Cote (Granby, Mass.) to hand Elms a 2-1 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth, Pitt-Bradford took back control with two outs and the bases loaded with an RBI single from sophomore Natalie Harding (Garfield Heights, Ohio), followed by a base-clearing, three-run triple from senior Amber Fox (Warren, Pa.) to push the Panthers to a 5-2 lead.

The Blazers chipped away at the deficit as Olszewski scored on an error by the Panthers in the top of the sixth to make it 5-3. Pitt-Bradford put the game away in the bottom of the frame, plating two runs behind an RBI single from Harding and an error by the Blazers to capture the 7-3 win.

Cote (1-4) was saddled with the loss in a complete game effort, allowing seven runs, six earned, on 10 hits. Olszewski had two hits with two runs scored, while Cote went 2-for-3 from the dish.

Sophomore Cassidy Lewis (2-0; Bolivar, N.Y.) earned the win, surrendering three runs, two earned, on seven hits with four strikeouts. Fox led the Panthers offense, batting 3-for-4 with three RBIs, while Harding went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
