CHICOPEE, Mass. – The Elms College Softball team soared past the visiting Southern Vermont College Mountaineers in a double header contest Thursday afternoon at the Cheryl R. Condon Field. The Blazers won, 14-0 during the first contest, then captured a 14-6 victory to close out the set. Elms climbs to 7-9 on the season and 3-1 in conference action, while the Mountaineers fall to 0-8 overall and 0-2 in NECC play.
Game 1: Elms 14, Southern Vermont 0 (5 Innings)
The Blazers came out swinging at the bottom of the first collecting five runs on four hits. The stint started with Keyla Oliveras (Springfield, Mass.) singling down the first base line. Oliveras then continued to use her speed to the Blazers advantage stealing second and third.
Kierstan Skinner (South Windsor, Conn.) reached on an error which was then over thrown sending her all the way to home plate along with Oliveras to snatch a quick 2-0 lead. Madison Messier (Warren, Mass,) singled, and then continued to advance after an Erin O' Donnell walk pushed her to second to which she would continue on to steal third. After a wild pitch Messier found home plate, sending O'Donnell to third. Taylor Skinner (South Windsor, Conn.) brushed off the two out pressure posting a double for Elms bringing home O'Donnell to continue to push the lead. Raeanna Tumel (Stafford, Conn.) would then produce a double as well brining home Skinner to give Elms a 5-0 advantage heading into the second inning.
The Blazers would continue on maintaining their high speed momentum scoring nine more runs throughout the next four innings while keeping the Mountaineers off the scoreboard.
The Blazers were led by Tea Sullivan (Dracut, Mass.) with three RBI's, followed by Skinner and Tumel with two apiece. Oliveras and Skinner led in hits with three each for the Elms squad.
Game 2: Elms 14, Southern Vermont 6 (Five Innings)
In game two, the Mountaineers made the scoreboard in the first after a Nicole Matthews (Pittstown, NY.) single brought home Rachel Robtoy (Baltic, Conn.) who had previously singled to center field for Southern Vermont.
The Blazers would respond with an Oliveras single to second base. Oliveras then stole second and third to put herself in a scoring position for Elms. After a Kierstan Skinner double to center field the Blazers were able to bring home Wrang and Oliveras posting a 2-1 scoreboard.
Southern Vermont continued to battle posting two more runs in the second with Lissa Soler (Yonkers, NY.) and Christina Moore (Wilmington, VT.) advancing to home plate to give Southern Vermont a 3-2 lead.
Elms would answer with an eight run stint that started with Tumel securing a double for the Blazers, then going on to reach third on a throwing error that pushed Samantha Alvino (Holtsville, NY.) home. Sullivan continued on for Elms singling a deep threat to drive home Tumel, which was followed with a Skinner single to bat in Sullivan and Oliveras who were patiently waiting on deck. From there Elms would go on to secure the victory eventually posting a 14-6 scoreboard to close out the afternoon in five.
Kierstan Skinner and Tumel led in RBI's with four each as well as hits tallying three apiece as well.
The Blazers will return to action back home Saturday, March 26th at 12:00 p.m. for a non- conference matchup against Eastern Nazarene at Cheryl R. Condon Field. The Mountaineers will play MCLA away March 31st.
