Blazers Band Together For Holiday Can Drive

CHICOPEE, Mass. – The Elms College athletics program continued their charitable efforts in the community for the holiday season, holding their annual athletics department can drive, organized by Elms College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), to benefit Lorianne's Soup Kitchen & Pantry in Chicopee.

"Being a Blazer student-athlete is more than just playing games under the lights, practicing every day, and having fans cheer you on from the sidelines," said Elms College SAAC President Meg Shewchuck. "It's also the role of being looked up to on-and-off the field. The can food drive brings all of athletics together as one to help those in need during this holiday season. By donating the amount of cans we did, we helped many people who needed it most and that's exactly what the Elms Athletics Community is about.

To help fuel the can drive, Elms College Director of Athletics Ellen McEwen offered a pizza party to the athletics team that could compile the largest collection of cans prior to the Thanksgiving deadline. After more than a month of student-athletes dropping off cans outside of their coaches' door, the Blazers combined to donate over various canned food weighing in at 571 pounds. The Women's Lacrosse team won the competition between teams, donating over 120 cans to the effort.
