CAPE CORAL, Fla. - The Elms College softball squad wrapped up their spring break trip with a pair of non-conference games Wednesday afternoon at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic in Florida. The Blazers fell to Alverno, 2-0, and then dropped a 13-2 tilt to Emory & Henry in five innings.

In the opener against Alverno, the showdown proved to be a pitcher's duel between Elms senior Beth Grimes (Terryville, Conn.) and Alverno senior Erin Dulek (Rosholt, Wis.) with the hurlers combining to allow just five hits in the first five innings of play. Dulek held the Blazers off the scoreboard in the sixth, as the Inferno broke through in the bottom of the frame. With the bases loaded, Alverno freshman Sarah Brumett (Belvidere, Ill.) drove an RBI single up the middle to break the scoreless tie. The Inferno pushed their advantage to 2-0 as freshman Mary Kate Sulikowski (Orland Park, Ill.) drew a bases loaded walk, bringing in freshman Ashlie Rossi (Hammond, Ind.). Dulek recorded a pair of strikeouts, followed by a double from Elms junior Samantha Alvino (Holtsville, N.Y.) and a pop out to secure the 2-0 win for Alverno.

Grimes (1-3) logged her fourth complete game of the season, allowing two runs on seven hits with five strikeouts. Dulek (2-1) picked up the complete game win, scattering just two hits in seven innings with a game-high 12 strikeouts.

Against Emory & Henry, the Wasps erupted offensively with seven runs in the opening inning of play. Emory & Henry knocked five consecutive singles to start the game, capped off by RBI singles from senior Bethany Anderson (Dublin, Va.) and senior Roxanne Hillman (Clintwood, Va.), to take a 2-0 lead. EHC sophomore Holly Eckard (Ringgold, Va.) drew a bases loaded walk, followed by an RBI single from sophomore Brittany Scott (Elizabethton, Tenn.). With the bases loaded, Wasps junior Taylor Banner (Castlewood, Va.) cleared the bags with a three-run double to centerfield, extending the EHC lead to 7-0.

The hits continued for the Wasps in the second inning as freshman Caley Hodge (Elizabethton, Tenn.) launched a leadoff home run over the left-centerfield fence, making it an 8-0 game. EHC freshman Bailey Williams (Wilmington, N.C.) singled to left center to extend the Wasps lead to 9-0 after two innings.

In the top of the fifth, the Wasps delivered their final blow as Hodge blasted a grand slam over the left-centerfield fence, her second home run of the day, staking EHC to a 13-0 advantage. The Blazers dented the scoreboard in the bottom of the frame as senior Rachel Beery (Springfield, Mass.) laced a two-run triple to right field, en route to the 13-2 loss.

Elms senior Jessica Colson (0-3; Agawam, Mass.) took the loss, allowing nine runs on 12 hits in three innings of work. Hillman (2-0) recorded the win, scattering two hits with three strikeout in three innings pitched.

The Blazers drop to 1-7 on the season, while Alverno moves to 4-3, and Emory & Henry improves to 6-0. Elms is scheduled to return to action with the Blazers home opener against Westfield State Wednesday, March 18th at 3:30 p.m. at Cheryl R. Condon Field.
