Softball Falls to Ohio Wesleyan University, 10-2

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Elms College softball team concluded action at the Gene Cusic Classic with a 10-2 loss to Ohio Wesleyan University on Wednesday morning in Fort Myers, Fla.

With the loss, Elms finishes its spring break trip 2-6 overall.

Ohio Wesleyan took an early 3-0 lead in the game with a run in the top of the first and two in the top of the second before Elms answered with a run in the bottom of the bottom of the third when junior center fielder Jennifer Bouvier (Mashpee, Mass.) singled, stole second and then scored on a groundout by senior third baseman Hayley Zisk (Baldwinville, Mass.).

The Battling Bishops struck for three more runs in the fourth inning to lift the lead to 6-1 before the Blazers responded with a run in the bottom of the fifth. Senior first baseman Ally Witaszek (Feeding Hills, Mass.) led off the frame with a single and later scored to pull Elms to within four at 6-2.

Ohio Wesleyan pulled away with four runs in the top of the sixth frame highlighted by a pair of singles, a double and a walk in the stanza to set the score at 10-2.

Battling Bishops' pitcher Jessica Gooden (Lexington, Ohio) retired Elms in order in the last of the sixth to complete the victory. She finished with 10 strikeouts in the winning effort.

Bouvier had two of Elms' three hits in the game, while junior pitcher Jessica Colson (Agawam, Mass.) dealt four strikeouts in the losing effort for the Blazers.

The Blazers return to action on Wednesday, March 19 at Westfield State University at 4:00 p.m.
