Softball Falls to MCLA, Dominican University in Day One of the Gene Cusic Classic

FORT MYERS, Fla. –The Elms College softball team fell to MCLA, 2-0 and Dominican University, 18-0 during day one action of the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, Fla.

With the two setbacks, Elms begins its season 0-2 overall.

In the 2014 season-opening contest against MCLA, Elms got four hits including one each from senior pitcher Beth Grimes (Terryville, Conn.), junior catcher Gianna Gonyea (East Longmeadow, Mass.), junior Alyson Santerre (Thompson, Conn.), and sophomore Kierstan Skinner (South Windsor, Conn.).

Grimes pitched all seven innings for the Blazers, striking out eight in the losing effort. She allowed two runs on nine hits and walked five.

Against Dominican, junior shortstop Gina DiGiovanni (Springfield, Mass.) and Kierstan Skinner each recorded a hit, while junior pitcher Jessica Colson (Agawam, Mass.) suffered the loss pitching the first two innings. She allowed six runs (five earned) on nine hits and struck out two batters.

Freshman pitcher Tessa Cote (Granby, Mass.) pitched two innings and allowed seven runs on nine hits, while junior hurler Elizabeth Patient (Leicester, Mass.) gave up five runs on six hits in relief.

Elms returns to action at the Gene Cusic Classic on Sunday, March 9 with a game against University of Pittsburgh-Bradford at 9:00 a.m. and a matchup with Bridgewater State University at 11:00 a.m.
