Softball Splits Day Two Action at Gene Cusic Classic

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Elms College softball team lost a 3-1 decision to North Park University before earning a 12-4 win over Mount Mary College in the nightcap to post its first victory of the season on Sunday during day two action of the Gene Cusic Classic.

With the split, Elms moves to 1-3 on the season.

Following the Blazers' loss to North Park, Elms registered a 12-4 victory over Mount Mary, as the Blazers' last four hitters in the order accounted for 10 of the team's 14 hits in the game.

Sophomore first baseman Ally Witaszek (Feeding Hills, Mass.) was 4 for 4 at the plate with a double, two runs scored and three RBI, while junior center fielder Leah Spring (South Hadley, Mass.) was 2 for 3 with a pair of runs scored and three runs driven in.

Elms plated four runs in the top of the second and tacked on two in the top of the third to stake a 6-0 lead. Mount Mary answered in the home-half of the third with four runs to pull to within two at 6-4.

The Blazers put the game out of reach with three runs in the fourth, two in the fifth and notched its 12th tally in the top of the sixth when Witaszek drove in Spring.

Senior pitcher Courtney Hampton (Westfield, Mass.) dealt six strikeouts in six innings in the circle en route to her first victory of the season to move to 1-1 overall.

Blazers' junior catcher Sarah Buckley (Wilbraham, Mass.) added a 2 for 4 effort at the plate with a double and a pair of RBI, while senior right fielder Jennifer Killion (Cambridge, Mass.) was 3 for 4 at the dish with three stolen bases. Spring added two swipes, while Witaszek notched one steal to help seal the win.

Elms returns to action on Tuesday, March 13 with a 9:00 a.m. game against Nichols College followed by an 11:00 a.m. tilt against Finlandia University.
