Men's Soccer Loses a Tough Game to Johnson & Wales

CHICOPEE, Mass. – The Elms College Men's Soccer team hosted Johnson & Wales University for a conference matchup on Wednesday evening at Leary Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The first half would see Johnson & Wales with offensive pressure early, after an offsides call in the opening minutes, the Wildcats attack would connect for a goal in the fourth minute of play. JWU would switch goalies in the 10th minute and then score their second goal shortly after. In the 18th minute, the Wildcats would connect for their third goal, they would then take an additional shot moments later and that would be saved by senior goalkeeper Aidan Berube (Chicopee, Mass.). After substitutions made by both sides, Johnson & Wales would continue their offensive pressure with a shot in the 22nd minute of play, but Berube would make another save for the Blazers. Soon thereafter, the Wildcats would press the Elms defense against their own net on a corner kick, causing confusion and the ball to end up in the back of the net for an own goal. JWU's offense would record another shot, being saved by Berube for his third of the game, but the Blazers offense would see some life after a shot by sophomore midfielder Patricio Vidales (Cancun, Mexico). The Wildcats would take one more shot before the halftime break, but the Elms defense would make a block, keeping the score 4-0.

Johnson & Wales would continue their momentum early in the second half after two quick shots that would be saved by Berube. The Blazers would see a shot by sophomore defender Nicolas Velasquez (Ellington, Conn.) that would go high of the intended target. The Wildcats would then score back-to-back goals in the 50th and 52nd minutes of play to extend their lead 6-0. Moments later, Vidales would take a shot for Elms, but the JWU goalkeeper would make the save. In the 63rd minute, first-year goalkeeper Jack Bousquet (Clinton, Conn.) would take over goalkeeping duties for Berube. The Wildcats would score one more goal before the final whistle blew, where Johnson & Wales would defeat the Blazers 7-0.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Berube would save five of the 11 shots he faced.

  • Vidales would take two shots, with one shot on net.

  • Celasquez would take the third shot for the Blazers.
